on critiquing, its best to actually say what you find wrong with them. Be polite in your language, but also, be specific. My CW prof once told us that being kind in critiquing isn't always helpful. She'd point out our good points, then she'll also point out what was lacking or wrong. And while we may disagree with her, we end up learning something from the exprience rather than just boosting our writer's ego.

Usually when I beta I just go ahead and say what's wrong, what they can change and even change some sentences around for them because I really can't stop myself when I beta... I need to break myself from the habit of changing people's sentences around... but I digress. I point out what they can fix and I throw in commentary about what I liked.

I tend to lean towards harsh, but not quite harsh when I beta. Just blunt.

I'm with Cali ^^; I more or less will tell people I think their story's great, no matter how much I actually read of it...

And NO, Jackie, this does not apply to you ;p Your story really is amazing, even without the partisanship of being a char!

Well, when I beta, I'm very honest. On sentences or paragraphs I think could be phrased better or perhaps more clearly, I highlight the original paragraph/line in read and then write comments in parenthesis, so the author can fix the sentences in his/her own style. I try to always have praise as well as criticism though, but I'm always quite honest.

With reveiws to some fics though, I'm not quite so blunt. ^_^

Yea... when I review, I usually highlight what I like unless something glares at me to be changed. Most of the time I don't really mention little things like random grammar points or spelling errors. And if I REALLY don't like something I don't review it. However, having a balance of mentioning the good and bad points in a story should make for a nice review that leaves the author feeling slightly confident, but not overly so. Theoretically..
