Being new myself, I'm sure I'm leaving things out, and don't have the definition quite right, but the general impression I have is that a beta reader is a lot like an editor. Gives you suggestions on how to improve, makes sure your plot makes sense, all the plot points are in an order that makes sense, and a lot more of course, but that's my general impression.
Don't quote me on that though! 'Cause I'm just guessing Since I don't write, I don't have a beta reader, so I could just be SO wrong.

Anyway! Hi! It's so nice to meet you! Isn't insanity fun? I must applaud you on being able to type with your tail! That's just so cool!

I always found alternate universe fics intriguing also. Saber's Tear by Ame~San is a great medival setting AU fic. It is located in the Heero x Relena Fanfiction Showcase...on the second page, I think.
