Chapter 1

Challenges




Two children playing in a park next to a large pavillion area were oblivious to the speaker as they laughed and put a tower to their sand castle. Their mother sat on a hill watching both them and the speaker, smiling to herself at their imagination.

"No, He-chan! The tower faces that way!"

"Nuh-uh. The knights can see the whole town this way."

"But the trolls are hiding in the woods that way! I'll save you!"

"What trolls? Ah! Eh-chan!" The girl toppled over both He-chan's shoulder and the tower, forcing the boy's face into the tower as she slid across.

Laughing the girl got up as He-chan spit out sand and dirt. Brushing off the sand, Eh-chan went to her brother and pulled him out, "Sorry, He-chan...I had to blow up the city or the trolls would have found you."

"You killed the King on his thrown..." He-chan pouted. Shrugging he got up and said instead, "Let's play tag!"

"Okay, You It!" She tapped him and laughed as she ran up the hill past their mother who shook her head with a laugh at their antics in the background. They were always playing and never seemed to tire of each other in her mind's eye.

As they rolled down the hill a shot rang across the park area making the mother jerk upright in shock. She whispered something quietly and ran down the hill past her children who stopped playing to stare at their mom running towards the pavillion with their car's driver running to catch up. "He-chan? Who's that over there?" Eh-chan pointed not too far off from the park where a man was getting up from some trees. He dusted himself off and walked towards the cars where another pair of men were standing, waiting for him. They then looked at the pair and spoke together for a moment or two.

"...Dunno..." He-chan frowned before the men walked up. Eh-chan pulled He-chan's arm into her grasp and stared at them.

"Hello there kids. Seen something around here?" One said cheerfully as the other went to Eh-chan's side.

"No." He-chan answered boldly but glared at the second man. Eh-chan shook her head and said, "Just that man over there playing in the trees."

"Hm? Him? Really?"

The first man sighed and said aloud, "Better take care of them..." Pulling out a gun he cocked it and pointed it at He-chan.

Wide eyed, He-chan froze but Eh-chan screamed, "Run!"

Like a shot, He-chan ran with Eh-chan not far behind. Cursing the men shot after the kids but they ducked behind a bush and kept running into the other part of the park. Panting, He-chan ran ahead but yelled out as he fell down a ledge. "He-chan!!!" Eh-chan screamed and would have followed but one of the men grabbed her from behind and pulled her away.

"...Got one of them, but the other fell down the ridge line..."

"He's a goner anyway...Forget him and let's go. It's too close to the shooting to start firing off anyway."

"He-chan!!!!"

A day or two later, Odin Lowe came across an odd thing in the woods. A lost kid.
