The Dancing Lights

Heero sat near the roaring campfire the lively sounds of conversations nearly drowning out the crickets chirping in the background. Letting his cobalt eyes trail around the ring of light Heero wondered what the point of it all was. They didn't need the fire for warmth, it was a beautiful summer day, or so Relena had called it. They weren't using it to cook food, though Duo and Hilde were roasting marshmallows over the open flames. Duo had tried on a few occasions to share this 'treat' with Heero, but the former pilot just didn't have a taste for such sweet things.

So why had he come out here?

The simple answer to that was Relena. Heero had learned long ago, that if she asked he would more than likely go along with it. He told himself it was to protect her safety, but that had begun to sound lame even to him. They had been seated around the roaring fire since the sun began to set, the stars were out now, and Heero took a moment to look at them.

It wasn't hard to tell the colonies from stars, they shone so much brighter; Heero had stood on observation decks as a boy, and more recently as a pilot. But there was just something entirely different about seeing the stars through the thick layers of Earth's atmosphere.

Heero caught sight of a flash, through the corner of his right eye. He could never fully relax, not even when in a secured location. His training had taught him to be ready at all times. Heero wasn't even sure what it felt like to ?relax?. He supposed the closest he'd ever come, was when he?d been highly sedated. But those had never been enjoyable experiences for him; he didn?t like not being in control.

He saw the spark again, and turned his head, it was too faint to have been a camera flash. So it should have been nothing to be concerned about, but at the very least it had caught Heero's interest. Without looking back at the others Heero got to his feet and wandered towards the flashes, he could see more of them now, blinking like little light among the trees. He came to a stop in a small clearing where the majority of the tiny flashes were dancing.

They were tiny bugs, in the darkness Heero couldn't make out much beyond that. They just flew around the clearing blinking away for reasons unknown to Heero. The display reminded him of something.

Heero leaned against a tree, folding his arms across his chest, as he watched the display with narrowed eyes. They reminded him of the muzzle flashes of firing guns. It made him think of watching a long fought battle, at night from a distant hill top. He could remember making his way through the woods the blasts of an oncoming battle shaking the ground beneath his feet. The sky above was on fire as a missile rushed past exploding against the mountainside.

"Heero?" Relena's voice slipped into Heero's thoughts and he blinked seeing the clearing and those flashing little lights.

He offered her a tiny smile watching the way the lights glittered off Relena's bright eyes. It made him wondered what she saw when she watched the lights; it was clear she enjoyed watching them. "The Fireflies are beautiful aren't they?" she asked leaning her head against him.

The former pilot cast one last glance at the dancing lights, briefly hearing the warning sirens of an approaching battle, before the crickets took over again. "Yeah..."

Wow! I really like this. Love how you worked in Heero's soldier life into it.
