Summary: Heero and Duo exchange some hard words, which ends up with Heero walking away. Will Duo and Relena catch him before he disappears completely out of their lives once again?
Trust in Me
written by: Nausica?
It took a long moment for Relena to take in the vision of Heero standing before her in the flesh, but it only took seconds for the tears to start streaming down her face.
Heero. After four years of believing that she?d never again be able to look into those eyes of pure blue, here he was. Relena sniffed. She?d always dreamed of this moment, of the time when she would be able to reach out and touch him and know he was there, of not having him disappear just as her fingers grazed his face. She?d always dreamed that he would meet her, here, at the place where they first met.
But not like this. Not when Duo and the painter were around. And especially not when Heero had a pained look of betrayal etched across his face.
Duo?s voice broke Relena out of her surprise-induced stupor, and she was horrified to realize that Heero was walking away.
?Heero, wait!?
He should never have come, that?s all Heero knew for sure. All other thoughts swirled in a maelstrom of confusion in his mind as he walked away from Duo and Relena, leaving Old Charlie alone, lost in the unfolding drama before him. As Duo ran passed Charlie, screaming after Heero to stop, all he could muster up was a look of utter dismay. Everything had clicked once he realized that the couple to his left knew the lad he?d been talking to. This young man, Heero, had been talking about the fair-haired girl who presently appeared to be rooted to the sand.
And I completely made matters worse! Charlie moaned silently. Ye daft, auld bugger! Thank the Father Emma can?t see you now!
Heero was halfway up the stairs when Duo caught up to him. Catching him by the back of his arm, Duo was too out of breath to do anything but prepare himself for impact as Heero lashed his arm out, losing himself of Duo?s grip. Duo landed hard but rolled to his feet immediately, knowing that his friend wouldn?t stop to watch his recovery. Heero was hell bent on getting as far away as he could from them.
?Let me explain!? he called after Heero?s retreating back. ?Won?t you even give me a chance??
That got his attention fast. As Heero stopped at the top of the stairs, Duo cautiously climbed the distance halfway before he too stopped, wary of what could happen. Heero slowly faced him. ?What?s there to explain, Duo??
"Well-" he began, but Heero cut him off with a slashing movement of his hand.
?Damn it, Duo! There?s nothing you could say that would convince me otherwise of what I saw. And what?s this about chances?? Heero gave a cynical grin. ?You knew the reason why I left ? the reason why I couldn?t stay! Sure, you waited, but you should?ve known that my being away from her wouldn?t change a thing!? Heero didn?t leave room for argument, and seeing as how Duo struggled for response, turned back around. ?You never asked for a chance with her, Duo. You took it.?
Hurt and angry, Duo couldn?t help it. His reply was spoken softly, the one sentence worded with the sharpness of finely honed steel. ?At least one of us had the guts to.?
Heero heard the softly growled words and felt them dig deep. He felt a sudden coldness grip his chest and wondered if that was his heart freezing once more. But he kept on walking. He had to show that the truth of Duo?s words didn?t affect him; that it didn?t bring him nearly to his knees.
Hearing pebbles shift, Duo turn around and was surprised to see Relena standing a few feet away from him, leaning against the boulder she?d hidden behind. Tears still traced down her reddened face, though not as profusely as before. ?Relena.?
With her eyes downcast, she swiped a hand over her cheeks, well aware that Duo was watching her. ?H-how?d he find out, Duo??
?I? I asked him.?
?Why?? Relena looked him in the eyes. ?A few months more, and it wouldn?t have mattered.?
Duo shook his head and stepped to take Relena in his arms. ?Yes, to him, it would?ve. You know it would. Heero?s just? well, he?s just angry right now.?
?We have to find him.?
?I know,? Duo replied, his chin resting on her head. ?But did you forget, Relena??
Pulling away to look up into his face, Relena gave him a questioning look. ?Forget what??
Duo looked up the stairs to the place where he?d last seen Heero and sighed with regret. ?That if Heero doesn?t want to be found, he won?t be. He did it four years ago, and he?ll sure as hell do it again.?
The engine of the rental car roared as Heero floored the pedal, seeking to vent his pent up rage and hurt through the noise of the furiously working machine. He wanted to hit something ? namely Duo?s face, but Heero decided that Relena wouldn?t appreciate him resorting to violence.
Oh god, Relena.
She was the absolute last person he wanted to think about, but to his chagrin, she was the only person who seemed to have built a permanent residence in his head. Every waking moment she haunted him. Hell, even when he slept she was there, behind his eyelids waiting.
But every single time he saw her, Heero had always seen her with him or alone, smiling just for him. But even as he pictured her in his mind?s eye, Heero couldn?t help but let the picture widen from just Relena to a portrait of her and Duo.
The knuckles of the hand that held the steering wheel whitened, the strength restrained so much that they popped. Feeling them brought Heero out of his grim reflection in time to swerve, narrowly avoiding a plunge to his death as he rounded a corner edging a cliff.
He needed to go somewhere where he could be alone, somewhere that was familiar, somewhere that had calmed him before. Then he could sort through the mess of today and somehow make sense of it.
Knowing just where to go, Heero felt the tightness in his shoulders ease just a little bit.
Peacecraft Residence, 11:00 pm
Pagan opened the door to a listlessly knocking Relena, a look of resignation making her seem beyond just being physically tired. Although when Pagan looked closer, he decided that indeed she was more than that.
?Would you like me to bring up your dinner, Miss Relena?? he asked, concerned. To him, Relena was the daughter he never had.
She smiled in response and gratefully gave him a soft squeeze on the shoulder as she passed by. ?I would love that, Pagan. What would I do without you?? As Pagan left her to perform his duties, Relena gave a dejected sigh, her feet automatically carrying her to her bedroom.
They?d searched for Heero for almost the whole of the evening, and all they knew for sure was that he?d headed east, the burnt tread marks signaling his departure. Duo and she had done their best to search, but with such a vague sense of where he?d gone, they knew their search was a losing battle from the start. But she?d insisted, searching with her heart in her throat, holding her breath in hopes that she might see him around the next bend.
And nothing. It was like she?d been daydreaming with a clarity that scared her and made her head spin at the same time. It was like Heero really had just disappeared once again, a repeat performance of four years ago. But Relena knew that Heero had been real. She could feel it. Knew that he was somewhere in the Sanq Kingdom, within her reach.
Sighing and forcing the tears away with a quick succession of blinks, Relena slowly went about her evening ministrations, gathering her sleeping attire, her brush, and heading for the bathroom. After the rush of seeing Heero again, Relena felt sluggish, taking extra time to slip her clothing off and brushing her hair once she?d changed.
But when she?d turned off the bathroom light and headed straight for her bed, Relena felt the beginnings of prickliness at the back of her neck. She froze, not knowing what to do, her breath stuck in inhale mode. Only one man could make her hair rise on end with his presence alone.
Turning towards the open window, Relena half ran half walked until she could reach the curtains shielding the frosted glass. Whipping the gauzy material aside, Relena?s mouth fell open with disappointment.
No one was there.
?I thought you would be here, Heero,? she whispered, her breath making smoky patterns on the glass. She turned away and jerked to a stop, eyes widening.
?I am,? Heero said, melting out of the darkness.
