Chapter 2 ? Predicament?s Beginning
?Miss Peacecraft, are you sure you?re ready for your new law convention tonight or do you want me to call the administrative center and inform them that you?ll not make it?? Ms. Wilson peeked at the ajar door of Relena?s office and inquired about her reply on the matter.
?Umm? there?s no need for that Emily. I?m fine. Just prepare the limousine for me and I?ll be down in a minute.? Relena timidly replied to her secretary while scanning through the ruffled documents inside her attach? case.
?Yes, Miss Relena. The chauffeur will be waiting for you outside the foyer.?
?Thank you.? With one final glance at her appearance on the mirror, Relena immediately grabbed her suitcase and then walked down stairs.
?Oh, Miss Relena, you look lovely tonight with that simple black dress. I?m sure that they?ll be gaping at you again.? A man in his late fifties complimented Relena while gathering her in his arms.
?Thank you Pagan. So, are we to go now?? Relena stifled her laughter at her chauffeur and then situated herself inside the car.
Ever since her foster father died, Pagan has been the fatherly-figure to Relena. He was always there to cheer her up and give her good advices whenever she needed one or when she have a problem. But what Relena likes best in him is his willingness to listen. He knows when to butt in and when not to. He would never comment on the matter nor would he suggest a plan to solve it when he knows that she doesn?t need it. He was just there for her to listen, to understand and to help her cry her worries out. Relena had already grown to love him as the time goes by like a real dad. And for that she actually considered herself blessed despite the fact that she really never had a genuine father.
?So, Miss Relena, why do the delegates decided to call for an emergency meeting? Is there any problem?? The gruff voice of the old man interrupted Relena?s reverie and took her away from la-la land.
?Huh, come again Pagan?? Relena blinked her dream-dazed eyes and tried to focus her attention to the man in the front seat.
?I was just asking the reason why the delegates called for an emergency meeting this late.?
?Actually Pagan, I myself don?t know the reason. But I can feel that something terrible is going to happen.?
?Oh, don?t be so pessimistic Miss. I?m sure that things will turn out fine.? Pagan glanced at the rearview mirror and gave her an encouraging smile.
?I hope so but I guess, there?s nothing left for me to do but to wait.? Relena sighed and looked outside the window going back to her trance-like state.
*****
Relena arrived at the Hilton Hotel at exactly ten in the evening and without any further ado went directly at the conference room. With her very observant eyes, Relena noticed how the tables and chairs were arranged and noted to herself. ?So much for a courtroom, I wonder what they?re up to.?
?Miss Peacecraft, we?re very glad that you made it.? Mr. Donenfeld welcomed her with a sickeningly sweet smile and held out a hand.
Relena took it and said a few flowery words of her own. ?Well, thank you. Is there anything I can do for you??
?Oh yes! There are lots of things, which you can do for me.? The man said with a glint of triumph in his intimidating brown eyes.
?And may I know what are those, Mr. Donenfeld?? Relena inquired with equal amount of confidence.
?You?ll find out later. For now, why don?t we join the others first in the table.? Mr. Donenfeld said with his nauseatingly sugary tone while gesturing his left hand for Relena to lead the way.
Relena?s seat was located at the left corner of the extensive table sitting directly in front of Mr. Donenfeld and Mr. Cortamaga. Mr. Bayers, Prime Minister of ESUN and the other members of the board were there as well.
Mr. Donenfeld stood up from where he was seated and delivered his introductory speech. ?Good evening ladies and gentlemen. As you all know, we are here tonight to discuss some important issues concerning the Neo Mobile Suit Act. Many were astounded and supported this new innovative act while others opposed and continued to disagree.? The man purposely looked and nodded at Relena as the corners of his mouth formed an evil smirk.
Relena slightly flinched at the condemning glare and sinister grin of the much older man but it never reflected on her firm pretense. She instead held her head up high in defiance and glared back at him.
?Without beating around the bush, I think that it would be better for the committee and for the assessment that each would be deciding on that the other side explain more elaborately their reasons for disagreeing and then the other party will give their own opinion on this as well. So that once and for all, we will be able to clarify, justify and analyze the pros and cons of this new proposed law so as to come up with a better decision whether to pass this decree or not.? Mr. Donenfeld finished off as he glanced from left to right and vice-versa to get a clearer view of the delegates? reaction.
?I think that was a great suggestion Mr. Donenfeld. So, could we now continue? I suppose that you want to speak your mind first Mr. Cortamaga.? Prime Minister Bayers assumed as he motioned for him to start off the talk.
?Umm? thank you sir. To begin with, I just wanted to enumerate in this committee all the benefits and privileges of our proposed law, which is the Neo Mobile Suit Act so that all will be able to have an overview of its good rationales. First, is the faster transportation of heavy military equipments from a certain base to another. Second, are the additional job opportunities for those who are unemployed. They could probably work as a computer programmer, technician, engineer, and so on and so forth in the factory that we?re planning to construct. Lastly and the most important, is the people?s protection against any uprising wars planned by some furtive organizations that we have gained the knowledge of just recently.? Mr. Howard Cortamaga proudly ended his dialogue and glanced at Relena, who defiantly stared back at him in return.
?Oh no, does he already know?? Relena?s subconscious mind asked as her heart thumped wildly in her chest as if it were about to explode right then and there. ?God, please don?t let it be what I?m thinking.?
Before Relena could even say a word to defend her side of analysis about the issue, Prime Minister Bayers had already interjected with another question. ?And may I know the name of the organization you are talking about, Mr. Cortamaga?? His eyebrows twitched questioningly at the man before him while taking a sip from his coffee.
?Care to tell us the details?? Another delegate namely Mrs. Richards interfered curiously.
?Sorry sir but I believe that it?s not of my position to speak about this matter.? Mr. Leopold replied trying to sound sheepishly.
?No! I insist that you tell us the truth now. We can?t wait until tomorrow because this is a very sensitive topic and I think it needed much attention as soon as possible. And that possible time is now. So go on Mr. Donenfeld.? Again, Mr. Bayers insisted for the truthful answer.
Now it was again Mr. Donenfeld?s turn to speak up and to reveal the secret that has been kept for the past few days.
A/N: No! Not another cliffhanger. Well, just read the next chapter to find out. Plus, your questions will be answered in the next chapters that would follow. Pls. send in your comments on Issahyrp@yahoo.com
