CHAPTER SIX
BY LARA WINNER
He pulled the car up to the curb, turned the key and shut off the
engine. The streetlights cast the interior of the car in deep shadows as he
stared sightlessly at the steering wheel. The pounding in his head continued
its monotonous torture as he closed his eyes leaning back against the headrest.
He was surprised at how long it had taken for him to give his statement and eyewitness
report to the police. Duo wasn't sure what was worse, the silence of the car or
loud bustle and racket down at the police station.
Even now, Duo fought back a smile as he recalled the numerous
stares he received as he made his first unofficial visit to the precinct. He
was quite familiar with more than half the city's police force and his rap
sheet was a mile long. Mentally he winced. That was what his lawyer had told
him the last time charges were brought against him. Every indictment from auto theft
to the possession and use of an illegal narcotic was on file under his name. It
wasn't something he was proud of but given the circumstances and his frame of
mind at the time, he hadn't really given his future or his reputation much
concern.
He opened his eyes, his gaze shifting sideways to look at the
welcoming steps of Saint Catherine's. Community service at the church had been
his last get out of jail free card. That was how he'd come to meet father
Thomas. It was his last chance to clean up his act and Father Thomas had put it
rather bluntly, if he screwed up again he would be locked away behind bars by
morning. It was going on three years now and he was still off the drugs and the
alcohol. He knew that a big part of his decision to be a priest was that he
wasn't sure he wanted to test the waters outside the sanctuary of the church.
He was finally making some headway with his life and he was more than a little
afraid to mess it all up again.
Sighing, he pushed open the door and reluctantly stepped from the
car. He slipped his keys in his pocket and with one last mournful glance at the
cathedral, he crossed the street heading for the brown and white building that
was the rectory. But as he came up the paved walkway his steps began to slow, a
strange restlessness taking hold of him. He needed fresh air and open space
because there was a great deal on his mind tonight. He needed to think about
where he was and what he was going to do. After the incident with Hilde earlier
that afternoon, he had an epiphany of sorts and the revelation had thrown him
for a loop.
Making his way into the building's courtyard a deep frown settled
on his face. With everything that had happened in the last 48 hours- the dream,
the memories, the rescue, the disappearing stranger, the almost kiss- he wasn't
so sure he could be a priest anymore. He couldn't make a commitment to God if
his heart and faith wasn't completely in it. Just the thought was enough to
shatter the carefully erected stability he'd found for himself and he felt his
insides twist in one viscous knot. Swallowing hard, he made his way over to one
of the cement benches and sat down heavily.
He was at a loss as to where to go from here. The pious worship
and the selfless dedication wasn't really that bad and he could deal with it,
but there was no way he could resign himself to a life of celibacy, not when
every time he closed his eyes he kept seeing a vivid image of Hilde on all
fours. He groaned softly shaking his head. What was it about her that made him
want loose all self-control? She felt it too, he'd seen the emotion in her
eyes, and knowing that... there was no way he couldn't let this go. He had the
feeling if he didn't at least attempt to see this to the end then he would
never forgive himself. But that left him on the edge of nothing.
Dropping his head in his hands he looked at the situation
logically. He built his foundation in the church; he'd put all his faith and
hope in the fact that this was where he was supposed to be. Not once did he ever
consider that God had different plans for him. So what was he supposed to do
now? He didn't really have a formal education since he'd dropped out of high
school at sixteen. No respectable business would ever hire him with the
criminal record he had. At this point he wasn't even self-sufficient. And to
top it all off he was going to try and draw Hilde right into all this mess.
Raising his eyes to the starry sky he laughed, his voice filled with
bitterness. "I'm loosing my mind, I really am."
"No you're not. You only wish it was that simple"
Duo froze, the breath leaving his lungs as he placed that toneless
yet mocking voice.
Heero...
Slowly, he lowered his gaze from the sky to settle on the deep
dark shadows that lined the small yard. Rising to his feet, he glanced around
warily, looking for any sign of movement. At the feel of a hand touching his
shoulder he spun around, his breath coming out hard as his heart began pounding
in a mixture of excitement and fear.
Duo expected the young man to be directly behind him but instead
Heero was leaning against the far wall, his stance relaxed and easy. He was
watching Duo with hooded eyes, his face expressionless. The demon's arms were
folded across his chest, his long black trench coat making him blend in with
the shadows.
Hesitantly Duo took a step closer, straining to see better in the
darkness. "So I'm not crazy 'eh?" He laughed nervously, unsure if he
should be relieved or terrified. "I had a feeling I'd see you again."
For a moment Heero regarded him in silence then abruptly pushed
off the wall tossing a small object in his direction. "Here take
this."
Duo caught the little black box and turned it over in his hand
eyeing it curiously. He flipped open the lid and smiled. The sliver cross
glinted in the moonlight as the mystic stone shards set in the sliver gave it a
striking look. Gingerly, he traced his fingertip over the cross once again
feeling the guilt well up inside him.
Not bothering to mask the confusion on his features Duo asked,
"Thanks Buddy, but why are you giving me this? I didn't think it was a
demon's job to help me keep my faith."
"You're right, I don't care about your faith or
lack-there-of. Wear it for protection, trust me, it will keep you safe."
"Safe from who?" Duo asked, looking up into Heero's
intense Prussian eyes. "From you? How do I know your telling the truth?
You could be messing with my head, twisting everything around. If you're a
demon then how can I trust you?"
Fire flashed in Heero's eyes, an unholy light entering the dark
blue depths giving them an inhuman glow. Heero snarled low in his throat and
before Duo could even blink he was slammed into the wall, being held off the
ground by the collar of his shirt.
"You have to trust me because everything you think you know
is wrong." Giving Duo one hard shake for good measure, Heero lowered him
to the ground staring him down nose to nose. "I am not your enemy. Now you
can either get a grip and let me explain or we can end this discussion here and
now and when they come for you I won't be here to watch your back."
"They're coming for you preacher boy"...
Sylvia's voice echoed through Duo's head and he paled. His grip on
the little box tightened as he asked softly, "What the hell is going
on?"
*********
He was inside.
She mentally added the distance between herself and the small
house-like building across the street. She was far enough away that he wouldn't
sense her now but even if she blocked her aura with all her ability he would
still feel her presence if she moved any closer. He was skilled, she had to
give him that, but he was not invincible. All she needed to do was bide her
time, be patient and if she kept her eyes open and vigilant then Heero Yuy
would give her just the opening she needed to destroy him.
Dorothy licked her lips in anticipation. To make such a kill would
do wonders for her reputation; angels and demons alike would fear her. No one
would ever dare question her loyalty or devotion to hell's cause and perhaps if
she managed to rid Akmen of Zechs too, then one day she would take her rightful
place as captain of Lucifer's army.
Heaving a wistful sigh, she leaned back against the hard rough
bricks melting deeper in the shadows. The steps of the cathedral spread out
before her beckoning to take them down to the street. She smiled to herself.
One would never think to look for her hiding in the entrance of a church. It
was quite the irony, if she did say so herself, but it wasn't like she was
going to turn into a ball of fire if she stepped through the glass doors. She
could even lay her hands on a crucifix, if she could stomach it long enough,
and nothing would happen. There really was no place safe from a hell spawn.
She flipped her pale hair back over her shoulder. She shifted her
stance trying to summon her dwindling patience. She sighed, her gaze sweeping
over the street below and closed her eyes, only to have them jerk open once
again and focus on the form that was preparing to cross the street.
How could she have not felt that presence sooner? Her skin tingled
and her hackles rose, preparing to fight as she quietly stepped from the dark
alcove. She knew that blond bitch anywhere. Even in mortal attire the woman
still carried that arrogance about her. It had been a long time since their paths
crossed and now was as good as time as any to settle old scores.
She grinned. "Miss Sally, I didn't think you would ever lower
yourself to actually step foot among the mortals. I guess even heaven has lost
it perks, hasn't it honey?"
Sally froze mid-step, her entire body going rigid. Slowly she
turned to face Dorothy, her ocean blue eyes glowing with immeasurable fury.
"You... How dare you speak of heaven."
Dorothy laughed, "Fuck heaven, fuck your precious god and
fuck you."
For a moment the young woman closed her eyes, saying a silent
prayer to try and get a hold on her rising temper. Then harsh, angry laughter
escaped Sally's lips as she shook her head sadly. "You would see it in
those terms wouldn't you? But what else is to be expected from your kind?"
Dorothy let the snide remark go as she made her way down the
steps, taking them one at a time while looking for anyway to get a good attack
position on the angel before her. She judged Sally's stance, hands shoved in
jean pockets and feet spread widely enough apart should she need to move
quickly. The oversized baggy white sweatshirt hid her figure leaving Dorothy to
guess in witch direction Sally would move instead foretelling it by the way her
tone muscles rippled. It was a risky position but she was sure she could easily
get the upper hand. She would not allow herself to think other wise.
But uncharacteristic caution rose forth as she remembered her true
objective. She was not here to kill Sally and if this continued into a battle
she was bound to give herself away to Heero. Once he knew she was after him he
would be expecting her and it would make her task that much more prone to
failure. She needed to catch Heero by surprise. It was her only option. She
muttered a curse before stopping herself from going any closer.
"Unfortunately you've caught me at a bad time. As much as I
would like rip you open and display your insides for the world to see, I have
more important matters to tend to. I don't have time for your righteous
bullshit Sally."
"Oh really?" Sally's smile held a note a malice and
spite. "Tell me, are you truly busy or are you afraid to run back to hell
with your tail between your legs like you've done once before?"
The threatening hiss rose from her throat before she could stop it.
Her fingers clawed, ready to rip through Sally's flesh as a fine rage began to
sweep its way across her mind making her logic falter. It was only by sheer
will that she held herself back knowing this was the reaction that Sally
wanted. One wrong move made in careless anger could determine everything in
outcome of a battle.
"You will regret you ever said those words. I will make sure
of it." She growled softly.
"Empty threats Dorothy."
Biting her tongue at Sally's mocking tone, she tried another approach.
She knew why Sally was here. There was only one thing that would send her
running from her beloved heaven and that was an order form the high council.
They must have changed their tactics from the woman to Duo. A sense of disgust
filled her at his name. He was once a revered leader. His name struck fear in
the hearts of all who crossed his path. He was even dubbed "the god of
death". Even she had strived to live up to his example. But for what? So
he could fall prey to emotions and become a complete disgrace. Duo was truly
pathetic.
Following that thought a new idea formed in her mind. She and
Sally were after similar objectives. With Sally by her side it would be just
the distraction she could use to get to Heero. He would be using most of his
energy to protect Duo and it would give her the advantage to get past his
guard. Then with Heero out of the way and her mission complete she would be
free to rip Sally limb from limb and Duo too.
Clasping her hands before, she graced Sally with an innocent, almost
sweet smile. "You've come for Duo haven't you? If you intend to kill him
than I can be of help."
"You expect me to trust you?" Sally laughed incredulously.
"I'm not a fool nor am I desperate enough to side with yo-."
"The way I see it, you don't have much of a choice. Heero is
with your target right now," She paused seeing surprise register on
Sally's face. "Heero will kill you, we both know that. But since I'm here
to relive Heero of his duties I propose we do this together. Two against one is
far better odds don't you agree?"
"I'm not falling for this trap Dorothy. Give ma little credit
because I'm not that ignorant."
Dorothy hated to do this. She really, really hated to do this... "I
cannot defeat Heero alone. His skill far exceeds my own and I am asking you for
help."
If it had been any other being at any other time Dorothy would
have found the shocked statement that crossed Sally's face to be quite amusing.
But since she had just thrown away her dignity for the sake of kissing ass she
was far from being amused.
"I thought it was a stricture in god's little hand book for
you to be a Good Samaritan?"
Sally bristled. "You know nothing of God's word Dorothy and
it is blasphemy to pretend you do."
Cutting directly to the point Dorothy snapped, "Are you in or
are you out. It doesn't matter to me either way. I will complete my mission
with or without your help but since we are both here and time is of the essence,
I figured we could do each other a favor. So which is it?"
"I'm in." Sally replied grudgingly. "But if you
think I'm letting my guard down you will be sadly mistaken."
Dorothy smiled knowing that Sally already was.
*********
"Will you listen to reason?"
Duo nodded, looking away from Heero's intense gaze, relaxing a
little when his shirt was released from it's threatening hold. He slumped back
against the wall as Heero began to pace back and forth in front of him,
agitation evident in each movement of his body. He barely heard Heero as he
mumbled under his breath something to the effect of 'where do I begin'.
"You can start with the visions I've been having." He
paused, bracing himself for Heero's answer. "Are they really memories? Is
this real?"
"Yes they are memories. That was your life long ago."
Heero sighed.
"I remember you. We were friends, I don't know how I'm so
sure but I feel it." Duo saw the corner of Heero's curve up slightly in
the darkness. "I was a demon too?"
"You still are at heart. That's something that cannot be
changed. But being what you are... there is more to it than what you've been
led to believe. You loved once and you gave up everything to keep it."
"Hilde." Duo breathed her name not even aware he'd
spoken it aloud. Even now his chest constricted with represses feelings and he
was certain he hadn't felt them before in this life. Seeing her, touching her,
just the thought of her seemed to channel and open a part of his soul that was
dormant without her. It was almost overwhelming.
Heero nodded his head absently, his voice gruff. "It will all
come back to you in due time. For right now all you need to understand is that
you are in serious danger and so is Hilde."
Duo stiffened, the events of earlier that day rising forth in his
mind. "Who would want to hurt her? Why would they do such a thing?"
For the first time since he began speaking Heero's pacing faltered
and he paused, turning to Duo with an unreadable statement. There was something
in the way Heero's body tensed, or maybe in the way he hesitated with the
answer, Duo wasn't sure, but suddenly a sickening feeling developed in the pit
of his stomach and he tried not to focus on the sudden dread that seemed to
take hold of him. He wasn't certain he wanted an answer but it was too late
now.
"The only way to put it is like this... If you two get any
closer it could end the world..." Duo's eyes widened and he pushed away
from wall, but before he could question Heero held up a hand and stopped him.
"...Or save it. I don't know the future but there is a war going on in
heaven right now and the two of you started it and now it's time to finish it
no matter the outcome."
How Heero's voice could remain calm and impassive through such a
statement was beyond Duo. His heart felt like it was trying to climb up his
throat and the queasiness in his stomach intensified tenfold. As crazy as the
explanation sounded, Duo was beyond the point of second-guessing the
irrational. How could he when his very memories were there serving as ample
proof?
Swallowing hard, he released his death grip on the small box in
his hand and opened it, removing the sliver cross from its resting place.
Turning it over in his palm he asked quietly. "So where does God fit it
into all of this? I thought we were waiting for Christ, not for a war between
immortals."
"I don't know God's opinion on this. I would think he agrees
that it is time for peace. But to answer what I do know, most of your religious
knowledge is based off the interpretations of man and not the true teachings of
God. I told you before. Most of what you think you know is wrong."
"Really?" Somehow Duo was not surprised by Heero's
explanation. It made the Holy Scriptures easier to understand. It explained why
love and compassion was taking a backseat to hatred and violence. It explained
the horrors he'd witnessed while making a living on the streets. It even
explained the irony of Hilde's lack of faith.
Duo made his way over and sank down onto the cement bench,
dropping his head in his hands as he tried to sort through his confused
thoughts and exhausted emotions. Softly he asked, "Hilde was an angel and
I was a demon. Did we break some kind of cosmic law by falling in love?"
For a moment silence greeted his question, then the low rumbling
of Heero’s laugher broke the air. It was an easy sound, not strained or forced.
Duo looked up lifting his brow at his friend's response.
"You didn't just break laws, you turned heaven and hell
upside down. The two of you proved that our races can live in peace and now it
is time for things to change. There is a balance that can be restored if we can
keep the two of you alive."
"So let me guess, we're on the hit list of everybody who
doesn't want this to happen right?" Duo stated more than asked.
Heero nodded taking a seat next to Duo. He gracelessly braced his
elbows on his knees as he stared out into the darkness. His statement was
thoughtful as Duo watched him through the corner of his eye. Finally he asked,
"How much do you remember?"
"Not nearly enough."
With a shrug Duo related his visions to Heero. He tried to explain
his feelings and recall every bit of the memories. When he finished he noted
the somber statement on Heero's face. "I want to remember more but I'm
drawing a blank here."
"I can show you." Heero offered. He didn't wait for Duo
to respond; instead he placed his palm against Duo's brow...
... "Where are we Duo?"
Glancing at his reluctant companion Duo chuckled. "Just take
a deep breath and close your eyes."
"Why?" Heero asked, annoyance evident in his tone.
"Just do it and shut up." Duo insisted. Following his
own order he closed his eyes reveling in the soft breeze that seemed to play
across his skin. The sunlight felt warm as he turned his face toward the sky.
He breathed deeply, exhaling the air slowly.
"Do you feel it?" He asked quietly, not opening his
eyes. "You can't find this feeling anywhere but on earth. Everything is
alive, even the air is different."
"Hn."
Duo cracked one eye open giving Heero a quick glance. The other
boy stood with his arms folded and a thoroughly bored statement on his face.
After a moment his opened his eyes, fixing his gaze on the desert valley that
stretched out before them from their position among the cliffs.
"What is the point in this? We are wasting time. This is
ridiculous." Heero muttered.
Leveling Heero with a grin, Duo explained in a condescending tone,
"How can you be a skilled warrior and understand your opponent if you
can't even take in the world around you? Listen to the wind, feel it touch your
skin. Let the natural rhythm of everything around you enter your mind. And use
that to your advantage Heero. It will always give you the upper hand."
Once again Heero closed his eyes. Duo watched as he breathed in
deeply concentrating on everything and nothing all at once...
...The grinding of metal upon metal made Duo grin, hell's fire
raging to life in is blood as he held off the angel that had attacked him. Deep
brown eyes glared back at him form behind a veil of mahogany hair. With a
grimace Duo put all his strength into a push that broke the locked position
they were in. Sparks flew through the air as the blades of their swords drew
apart violently.
Duo reigned in his impatience to strike and waited for Vachel's
next move. All around them chaos ensued, the clash of broad swords and the
striking of shields seemed to echo together with the agonizing screams of the
fallen. Yet nothing entered his mind. Instead he concentrated solely on the
young angel before him. This young girl was a strong fighter but she was
reckless and hot-tempered. If he could just get her to loose her focus then it
would all be over.
He smiled nastily. "Tell me, what is a child like yourself
doing in the midst of a battle field?"
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Ridding the universe of scum
like you."
"That's what you'd like to think." He laughed, turning
away. With his back to her it gave her the opportunity to strike him and he was
ready. Instead she rose to his insult by delivering another of her own.
"Your nothing but a coward! Run back to hell!"
Tightening his hold on the hilt of his sword he faced her again.
"I'm not a coward, I'm bored. Give me more of a challenge and you might be
worth my time."
His words had their desired effect. Anger contorted her childish
features as she snarled, "I'll give you more of a challenge," then
rushed him with her weapon at the ready.
He blocked her blow with his silver shield using her clumsy speed
to counteract the force of her strength. The impact made her gasp and sent
tremors running through her arm. She only paused for a second but it was all
the time he needed to swing around his blade and bring down right on her arm,
slicing through flesh, muscle and bone. She screamed in pain and the sound was
a ring of victory. With a triumphant smile he raised his sword and put and an
end to her wailing, severing her head from her body in one quick movement.
Hefting his sword he turned just in time to stop the fatal
downward arc of another attack. Turning is wrist he deflected the other man's
blade. Dropping his shield Duo grasped the angel's wrist and pulled him forward
driving his own sword into the man's stomach. Feeling particularly vicious, he
jerked the sharp blade up the angel's chest watching blood spill over his lips.
Using his foot he pushed the corpse to the ground.
"Duo watch!"
Hearing his name he turned barely sidestepping a thrust that was
meant for the center of his back. Instead the felt a burning pain as the weapon
caught his arm between the shoulder and the elbow. A low inhuman growl rumbled
deep in his throat. Fear flashed across the face of the young boy he now faced.
Ignoring the pain Duo balled up his fist and slammed it into the boy's jaw
sending him sprawling on the ground. Granting no mercy he brought his sword
down right in the angel's chest thrusting so hard the tip of his blade imbedded
itself in the ground.
Looking up he nodded to Heero then angrily pulled hard on his
sword...
..."Akmen leave him be. He's only a child." Duo snapped,
watching as the older demon stiffened, turning to level him with infuriated
ruby eyes.
"Did you say something?" Akmen asked snidely. "If I
didn't know better I'd say you were taking up for this worthless runt." As
he spoke he cruelly kicked the cowering child, eliciting another painful
whimper from the little pale haired boy.
Duo frowned. "I am. Pick on someone your own size."
"Don't tempt me Duo." Akmen smiled, cracking his
knuckles as he took a threatening step forward. "Lately you've become far
too headstrong. Maybe it's time I put you in your place."
"You can try." Duo laughed. "Do you think I'm
afraid of you?"
"You should be."
Ignoring Heero's warning look, Duo rotated his shoulders and
stepped up to Akmen's challenge. Balling his fists he raised his arms into
fighting stance. Keeping his body limber, Duo faced Akmen circling the other
demon as he came closer.
They eyed each other warily, each waiting for the other to make
the first move. A small audience was gathering around them. Hushed voices
whispered among the crowd, anticipation building until Akmen reacted with out
warning landing a right hook directly in Duo's jaw. He staggered a step back,
shaking his head as Akmen moved in again. This time Duo blocked his advance.
And so it went, each getting in a blow hear and there. As the
minutes passed it seemed like hours. Sweat trickled down Duo's face and his
muscles began to ache in protest. He could tell Akmen was also feeling the
strain, his youthful face was flushed and his breathing grew heavy as time
passed. Finally Duo misjudged Akmen's speed and the other demon's fist once
again landed against the side of his face sending his sprawling on his back on
the hard rocky ground.
"I'm still stronger Duo." Akmen panted tiredly.
"You are only my Captain and if you so foolishly challenge me again you
will suffer a far worse fate than landing on your ass. Understood?"
Refusing to answer Duo glared with barely disguised loathing
etched on his handsome face as he watched Akmen walk away. Taking Heero's
offered hand he let his friend help him to his feet. Gingerly he rubbed his
jaw. "I hate that fucker, I really do."
Heero's lips quirked as he gave Duo an admonishing look. "Be
careful who you say that to."
"Yeah, I know." Duo muttered absently as he looked
around for the little boy that got him in this mess. Finally he caught sight of
a pair of blue eyes watching him from the shadows. "Quatre come
here."
At his request the little blond haired demon scampered out of his
hiding place and rushed to Duo's side. He crouched down to the little boy's
level and gave him a small smile. "Are you okay?"
Quatre nodded, his eyes wide and frightened.
"I thought I told you to stay out of Akmen's way?" Duo
scolded lightly.
"He summoned me." The child responded in a quiet tone.
"Dorothy got me in trouble."
Duo sighed. "I figured as much." His statement softened
as he ruffled Quatre's hair. "Come on. Let's get you out of here."
...
Duo blinked his eyes and the memories faded as quickly as they
entered his mind. Heero's cold touch no longer lingered on his brow and he
looked at the other young man curiously. "That was-"
Before he could finish his question Heero raised a hand motioning
him to silence. Like observing a hungry beast stalking his prey, Heero's ears
seemed to perk up and his entire body strained with sudden alertness. Barely
above a whisper he breathed, "Be still, someone's here."
Heeding the warning Duo felt a chill run up his spine as
uneasiness began to creep over him slowly. Trusting his intuition and the
memories that he was plagued with he slipped the delicate silver cross around
his neck and fastened the clasp. Was it his imagination or did a tingling
sensation surge through his body as the cross fell against his chest?
But there was no time to ponder the thought as the shadows
suddenly came to life with movement, giving birth to two forms that moved closer
and closer to the light. As the soft moonlight broke free from the obstructing
clouds the silvery beams cascaded over the approaching figures revealing the
very feminine curves and striking faces of two captivating women.
The first woman was tall, her honey blond hair pooled over her
shoulders in a shimmering wave framing her expressionless face. The second
woman was equal in height but her body was slim, almost seductive, her pale
blond hair fell down past her waist swaying as she moved and her face was set
with a smirk giving her a devious look.
"Son-of-a-bitch!" Heero cursed under his breath.
"This is not good."
The words were so faint they barely entered Duo's mind. His eyes
were trained on the young woman dressed in black. But it wasn't her luscious
body that caught and held his attention. It wasn't even the unusual color and
length of her hair or the carnal sexual energy she emanated. What caught Duo's
attention was the sudden rush of pure unadulterated rage that flooded his mind
in a red haze. Hatred, raw and disturbing in its fury, filled his heart as the
sudden urge to beat the smug smirk off of her face became almost
uncontrollable.
Dorothy...
The name flashed across his mind followed by a memory that made
his blood run cold.
...The iron cuffs bit into his wrist, cutting the flesh deeply as
red rivulets of blood ran down his muscled arms. His knees screamed in protest
to the kneeling position he was forced to assume. His body swayed in sheer
exhaustion, the cuffs chained to the cavern ceiling being the only thing
holding him upright. His head hung limply between his shoulders from the lack
of energy to lift it. His eyes stung from dryness and dirt particles yet he
couldn't close them for alone in his cell there was nothing to keep him company
but visions of his Hilde covered in blood, nothing but the sound of her
blood-chilling screams ringing his head.
"It hurts doesn't it?"
The soft childish voice echoed through the earth cell. Loud and
piercing, her words broke the silence and Duo internally winced. "What do
you want?" he hissed, not raising his head.
"I came to see you. I thought you could use a little
company." An undertone of laughter was evident in Dorothy's voice as the
child taunted, "I even took a set of keys. If I wanted I could release
you."
"You releasing me out of the kindness of your heart? I've
heard better jokes before."
Metal groaned against metal as the lock on the cell door was
opened. Soft delicate footsteps pattered on the ground only stopping when tiny
feet came just into his line of vision.
"They're going to kill you tomorrow." She stated
matter-of-factly.
"I wish they'd do it now,” he mumbled.
She giggled. "No idiot. You have to suffer first. I'm sure
you would rather be dead than to face such a humiliation but its more fun this
way. It gives you time to think about what you did to her."
He stiffened. Pain seemed to crush his chest. "Don't speak of
her."
"What's the matter Duo?" she questioned innocently. "Its
not enough that you had to make laughing-stock of yourself, was it? No, you
killed her too." She gloated cruelly. "Admit it, you enjoyed watching
them hurt her. You liked it when she cried. Her pain thrilled you."
"NO!" He snarled completely unaware of the tears making
clean paths on his dirty cheeks.
"But I think you did. Was it fun using her like that? Did it
make you feel good knowing that you were soiling her soul?" Her gleeful
voice turned slightly bitter. "Or maybe you really loved her and it's
slowly killing you inside out."
"Maybe so, just know this. There is nothing you can say that
could make me feel any worse." Duo whispered. Slowly he raised his head
allowing her look into his dead, soulless eyes.
"Oh I wouldn't say that." Dorothy's blue eyes sparkled
with ruthless amusement. "Just how do you think they found out about you
and that angel bitch?"
"You..."
"That was mean of me wasn't it?" When he refused to
respond she shrugged. " I brought you something." She leaned forward
placing her offering on the ground.
Duo looked down only to squeeze his eyes shut tightly, swallowing
hard against the bile that rose in his throat. Lying on the dirt was a handful
of white feathers stained crimson.
"You fucking little piece of shit!" He screamed lashing
against his restraints wishing he could get his hands on her. Fire shot down
his arms as the cuts severed even deeper into the vein. Every muscle in his
body ached at the sudden movement. His violet eyes turned red as he strained
and tried to get free to no avail.
At his pathetic attempts the child laughed...
Duo's hands trembled as the vivid emotions continued to course
through him. He hated to admit it but if felt good to give into his anger.
There was a release of sorts in cultivating the hatred he knew himself capable
of. His hands clenched into fists. He bit his lip so hard it drew blood.
"Hello boys!" Dorothy sneered. Giving Heero a pointed
stare she murmured, "Sweetie, we really have to talk."
Heero's mouth set in a grim line as he took a step forward
blocking Duo. "I'm not stupid. Spare me the bullshit."
"It's orders Heero, you know the drill." Sally snapped,
her ocean blue eyes glaring daggers at the young man.
"Over my dead body."
Dorothy laughed. "Don't worry Yuy, I'm more than happy to oblige."
"Duo stay back and if you get the opportunity run!"
Duo fought to keep his face expressionless as the mental words
entered his head. If he didn't know better he would think Heero was concerned.
Well that was too bad. He had the blood of a warrior running through his veins
and never once in his life had he ever run from a fight. Even on the streets he
had made quite the reputation for himself and he'd be damned if he ran from the
most important battle he ever faced.
Then again this was way out if his league...
He watched with wide eyes as Heero raised his hands, cupping them
in a receiving manner. A tiny beam of red light began to glow in his palms,
growing bigger and brighter as more energy was called forth. Taking a step
back, Duo swallowed hard as Dorothy began channeling her own energy. Heero's
hair ruffled from the sheer force of what he conjured and his Prussian eyes
took on a amethyst hue that slowly turned to ruby as a demonic power, far
beyond mortal understanding, took hold of him. Despite Duo's complete trust in
his friend it was sobering to be reminded that he was a powerful being that was
bred to destroy.
Like a clash of thunder both Heero and Dorothy released their
power, lighting up the courtyard in a surreal display. Duo could only watch,
mesmerized as they put all their strength into the very battle of skill.
Through he corner of his eye he saw Sally move closer and he turned to face her
wearily.
"Duo Maxwell, I'm advising you to make this as easy on
yourself as possible."
Feeling adrenaline flow through his veins like quicksilver, he let
the demon inside him take over guiding the fluent movements of his body. He let
her come closer waiting for the second to strike. There was a good chance she
would kill him right here and now but it didn't matter. With him dead they would
leave Hilde alone. If death was the outcome so be it, but he wasn't going down
without a fight.
Sally took another step closer almost fooling him with her casual
stance and appearance. But the cold calculating look in her eyes was enough to
make his anger rise as he snarled softly, "Like hell I will you demon
whore."
Her mouth tightened and her eyes narrowed. Acting upon surprise
Duo moved swiftly, his fist flying even as he mentally winced at the fact that
he'd just hit a woman. Flesh upon flesh made a sickening thud and Sally's head
jerked to the side as she stumbled a step back. Clapping a hand to her cheek
she looked at him in shock for a moment before shook her head, her blue eyes
glowing with anger.
"You shouldn't have done that." Sally whispered.
The center of her chest suddenly split as a while light shot out
in a direct beam, making Duo shield his eyes from the brightness. The light
enveloped her body in a flash, so intense he closed his eyes for a second, when
it dissipated Duo's jaw dropped. White wings were spread in a threatening
stance, gold armor glinted in the red light that surrounded them, and a soft
laugh escaped her lips as she wielded her broad sword in a skilled arc. "I
warned you Maxwell but you insist on doing this the hard way."
"You... you're not a...a demon?" Duo stammered.
"No, I'm an angel and you will suffer the wrath of God for
this discretion."
"Uh-oh."
With lightening speed Sally lunged, the wide heavy blade barely
missing Duo's arm as he sidestepped her blow. His heart beat thunderously in
his chest as he scrambled away but she continued advancing, blow after blow
barely missing its target. Sweat trickled down his hot, flushed skin and his
breath came in hard, frightened gaps as the sharp blade crept closer and closer
to making contact with his skin.
Before his eyes could follow the glint metal he felt a searing
pain against his side, juts above the waistband of his pants. Hissing in pain
he stumbled backward, colliding with the brick wall behind him. She leveled the
tip of the sword at his throat and he watched her with something akin to panic
surging through his chest. He was trapped; there was nowhere to move. He closed
his eyes and waiting for the fatal strike.
And waited.
And waited...
Slowly he opened his eyes only to find Sally staring at... He
looked down to his chest and gasped. The silver cross shimmered, a blue glow
surrounding the sacred talisman. Like flowing water, he felt a tingling run
across his skin as the blue glow moved to surround him.
"Evil trickery." She breathed. With a small angry cry
she tried to dive the sword forward but it never reached his skin.
In amazement Duo watched as the cross served as a shield. He felt
the force of the strikes but they didn't penetrate the blue aura. Instead each
hit seemed to make it stronger. He winced. He could feel it, like thousands of
tiny needles piercing his body. It was becoming apart of him, fusing with his
skin, contracting his muscles, and sent shock waves deep into his bones. He
grit his teeth tried to force the sensation away.
Then it exploded in a crash of blue against red...
He wasn't sure how he did it, or even if it was by his control at
all. All his mind could process was that before his eyes a blue beam of energy
shot out from the cross sending the angel before him to her knees in pain.
Sally's face contorted in an agonizing statement as the blue light went right
through her armor. A small scream escaped her lips and her body curled up, her
limbs trembling. And for all the anger and pain he was feeling himself, Duo
found he couldn't make her suffer. Now, of all times, the darkness inside
deserted him and in its place was another unfamiliar emotion, something he
hadn't always known, something like... compassion...
Abruptly the blue energy faded, drawing itself back into the cross
lying against his chest. A second later he found himself kneeling beside the
fallen angel, unsure whether to touch her or not. He reacted with out thinking,
without even weighing the effect if his actions. But he wasn't sure what to do.
Taking a chance he placed a hand on her shoulder, whispering,
"Sorry."
He glanced over at Heero seeing that his friend was in control,
pinning Dorothy against the ground while blasting wave after wave of red energy
into her body. A purely evil little voice in his head laughed at Dorothy's
obvious distress. But his glee was cut short as Sally groaned and he turned to
her, his statement weary.
"Why didn't you kill me?" She asked bluntly.
He answered honestly. "I don't know," he shrugged,
"I just couldn't"
One golden brow arched in curiosity. "Duo the mighty 'god of
death' really does have a heart. I don't believe it."
He stiffened, something nagging at the back of his mind about that
title, but the thought was too illusive for him to grasp. Instead he pushed it
away and focused on the here and now as he helped an unsteady Sally to her
feet. "So does this mean you're not going to kill me now?" He asked
meekly.
"I didn't say that." She replied, then right before his
eyes she disappeared into thin air... but not before he heard her mutter in
obvious pain, "Just pray that the next time we meet you're not my
objective."
In the blink of and eye she was gone, yet he still felt the
haunting effect of her words. They were foreboding and yet so simple, so
matter-of-fact. He shook his head. He couldn't worry about future
confrontations right now; he had more important things to deal with, as in the
demon that was about to be completely fried in the rectory's courtyard.
The red energy was gone. Heero had collapsed to his knees, his
chest rising and falling as he tried to catch his breath. Duo took one look at
Dorothy and winced. She was barely moving, blood trickled from the corners of
her mouth, her eyes, her nose, her ears, and he could smell her burning flesh.
She was almost dead and he didn't feel anything. There was no compassion or
pity filling his heart at the pathetic sight of her. He felt nothing.
"What are you going to do with her?" He asked Heero
softly.
"She's Akmen's problem, not mine."
"He wants you dead." Duo sighed, reading between the
lines.
Slowly Heero rose to his feet. "He wants us all dead."
Duo nodded, accepting Heero words as truth. He remembered enough
about the powerful demon to know that Heero was justified to be on guard and
worried. Closing his eyes, Duo felt his stomach turn as everything that had
just happened registered. How much of this could he go through? He was only
human, no longer a true demon. Unlike in his previous life, he felt things more
clearly now and as a mortal he was able to understand the right and wrong of
everything he did. There was no way he could live without a conscious and
become a demon again. That truth came to him from his heart.
Pressing his hand to his side, Duo hissed in pain as took a step
away form Dorothy's body. The smell was making him sick; the sight of her was
wearing at his already strained sanity. He couldn't take anymore-
"Duo!"
The muffled call of his name made his heart slam against his ribs.
Father Thomas! Oh God... Practically limping, he made his way to the side
entrance, ripping opening the door just as the elderly Priest appeared in the
doorway.
Bracing his arms against the doorframe, he grinned manically
"Hey Father." He greeted with forced cheer.
"What in God's name is going on out here? Sounds like the sky
is falling on our heads. What are you doing out there this time of night?"
Father questioned gruffly. When Duo refused to move out of his way he tried to
look over Duo's shoulder.
"There's nothing going on. I was just sitting out enjoying
the peace and quiet." He lied, hating himself for it.
"Maxwell, I saw red and blue lights flashing through the
window and I heard very loud noises." The Priest insisted.
"Are you sure? I didn't see anything. Maybe a police car
passed and that's why you saw the lights." Duo laughed nervously as he
tried to coax the Priest back into the hall.
With a firm push for a man his age, Father Thomas squeezed past
Duo making his way out into the courtyard as he muttered, "I know you're
hiding something Duo..."
The Priest's voice trailed off and Duo rushed out beside him,
preparing to explain as best he could- Duo blinked. The yard was empty. His
eyes scanned the darkness wildly but there was no sign of Heero or Dorothy that
he could see. They vanished into the air. Man he hated that!
Breathing a sigh of relief he patted father Thomas's shoulder
sympathetically.
"See, I told you nothing was wrong. There was nobody out here
but me."
"But..." The old man looked away with uncertainty
clouding his features. "I thought I heard... I saw, " he shook his
head. "I must be starting to feel my age. Duo, do you think I should make
an appointment with Dr. Hebert? I was sure I saw..."
"No, just get some sleep father." Duo answered, steering
the Priest back inside. He really hated to mess with Father's mind but he was
better off thinking he's crazy then to get involved and get himself killed.
After making sure Father Thomas was tucked back into bed, Duo gave
the courtyard another glance and was just about to close the door when a pair
of blue eyes reflected the moonlight much like the eyes of a cat. Heero was
there. Duo smiled to himself and he closed the door and bolted the locks.
Now to get some sleep...
Sleep?
Yeah right...
*********
"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil..."
Quatre paused as the soft words ended on a choked sob. He frowned,
debating following the sound of the familiar voice. He was here, within
heaven's vast garden, to meet with Michael. It should have been a simple task
but he must have taken a wrong path because instead of finding Michael he had
stumbled upon Relena.
"Curse Daedalus for creating such a confusing labyrinth"
He breathed softly, willing himself to move and continue forward, or to turn
around, or to do anything but approach the crying angel on the opposite side of
the hedges.
But something held him fast to where he stood. Perhaps it was the
completely heartbroken sound of her cries that touched his heart, or maybe it
was the fact that he could never stand to see anyone or anything in so much
pain. He sighed. This was one area where he should mind his own business. He
doubted she would welcome his company or accept any consolation he could offer.
But he had to try.
With cautious steps he rounded the corner and felt his hart twist
at the disheartened picture Relena presented. She sat on the ground, her pale
peach robes spread out around her on the emerald grass. Her wings were tucked
tightly around her body in a comforting manner. Her shoulders shook with the
force of her tears as she buried her face in her folded arms, bracing herself
on the ledge of the ornately carved stone fountain that stood in the center of
the small secluded clearing.
A frown curved Quatre's brow as he moved forward, careful not to
make a sound. Gingerly he took a seat on the ledge and with a trembling hand he
gently caressed her silky hair in what was supposed to be a soothing touch. To
his chagrin, Relena gasped and jerked back, almost falling over as she looked
up at him with wide, watery sky blue eyes.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to frighten you," he blushed
and nearly stammered, "I heard you crying and I came see what was
wrong." He smiled earnestly holding his hands up in a submissive gesture.
The wild look slowly left here eyes and after a moment she looked
down and folded her hands in her lap. Her voice was soft, yet bitter as she
asked, "Did he send you? Are you spying for that...that... arrogant
imbecile?"
"Of whom do you speak?" Quatre laughed, startled.
"Heero..." As she whispered his name her blue eyes
filled up again and she ducked her head as the tears spilled over cascading
down her cheeks.
"No, I... I'm... Not here on Heero's orders." Smiling
gently he moved to sit on the lush grass, hugging his knees to his chest.
Leaning back against the stone ledge, he looked at her sideways and asked,
"You look like you could use a little help and I thought I'd be of
service. Care to tell me what is making you cry like this? Is it Heero?"
Relena shook her head sending her golden hair falling over one
shoulder. She still refused to meet his eyes but he saw the tension slowly
leave her body as she began to relax. After a moment she sighed. "I failed
a mission given to me by the high counsel... willingly."
Quatre felt the slightest smile curve his lips. "You don't
regret it, do you?"
She gave him a curious glance. "No I don't."
"Then why cry about it? You did what you felt was right. Just
have the courage to follow the direction that this decision leads you in."
"But I can't abandon my beliefs so easily," she choked.
"I'm so confused. I thought I knew what was right and what was wrong. It
all seemed so clear, but now I'm not sure what to believe in. And it is all
Heero's fault," she fumed, "He made me question my motives and second
guess my orders and now I've betrayed everything I devoted my existence
to," she raised her eyes up ward, "God help me, please let him leave
me be."
This time Quatre couldn't help but chuckle. "I can remember a
time when he said the very same thing about you."
"What?" She blinked.
"Heero will never leave you be, so you may as well get used
to the idea of having him lurking around somewhere. You've caught his attention
Relena and I can see why. You have opened his eyes to a new way of thinking and
feeling. Trust me, he doesn't like it any more than you do."
His quiet words seemed to render the young angel speechless. He
smiled. It was time someone opened a door of those two. It was worse than the
blind leading the blind. Heero had trouble saying her name much less ever
admitting his undivided interest in her. And Relena, up to a moment ago, was
completely clueless to the effect she was having on him. It was really
beginning to get on his nerves, this endless game of cat a mouse. Even the
knowledge that Heero would kill him for interfering was not enough to dampen
his optimism at the prospect of what a union such as theirs could lead to. But
his romantic heart was thinking too far into the future. There was a good
change that none of them would be around to see what the worlds would come to.
"You think Duo and Hilde belong together, don't you?" He
asked softly.
This time there was no hesitation in her reply. "Yes."
"Then you believe in love Relena and in that there is no
right or wrong. It is love that motivates the heart. It is the heart that
stimulates the soul. The two go hand in hand. You cannot have one exist without
the other. That is the problem we are facing now."
"How so Quatre?"
"Take you and I for example. We were led from our creation to
see in black and white. We were told what was right and what was wrong. It was
never ours to find out for ourselves, was it? We simple did as told. But our
leaders are not following their hearts. Love is fading and hate is rising and
it's the souls like us who are in the verge of loosing to the one true evil in
the universe.... Greed."
"Do you really think Gabriel is following his heart?" He
insisted. " He wants to rule heaven with an iron fist. Do you think Akmen
cares? He wants to rule all realms and will stop at nothing to achieve this. So
in essence what makes them any different?" Quatre asked with a smirk.
Pondering the comparisons Relena lifted her shoulders in a
delicate shrug. "Nothing I suppose."
Quatre nodded. "Angels and demons are not very different than
mortals, you know. We are driven by the same desires and thoughts and
emotions." When Relena looked skeptical he smiled. " A demon can love
Relena, if shown how or given a reason. Same goes for angels. You could hate if
given a reason. In the end it is this common link in our existence that keeps
the cycle of life in motion. Real evil is not a Hell born concept. Evil exists
in everyone as does good. We are the ones who chose which one guides our
actions."
"So the Council is wrong?" She asked as more of a
statement of fact. "Then I think its time I start making my own choices
and stop following their orders."
"Your heart will never steer you wrong." He replied.
Relena smiled. "You are a demon Quatre and yet I have never
met another like you. You should have been an angel."
Quatre laughed. "Indeed I should have, but I think I am what
I need to be. I would not fit in here just as I do not fit in with my own kind.
It's almost as if I can feel both enigmas clearly. Quite ironic if you ask
me." Letting his smile fade he reached out and patted her hand gently.
"Are you alright now?"
"Yes, I still have a lot to come to terms with but I know
where I stand now." she grinned a small imitation of her usual radiant
smile. "I'll be fine."
Quatre noted that her eyes were sparkling with a glint of
determination that was missing before. Feeling at ease, he rose to his feet,
offering sheepishly. "If you have need of anything I'll be more than happy
to help."
With a curt nod, he turned away only to have Relena call out his
name once more
"Thank you for everything Quatre." She said with true sincerity.
He smiled then returned to his errand feeling lighter of heart for
their encounter.
Watching him leave Relena smiled slightly and mused to herself,
"You are unique Quatre and this is strangely ironic. I prayed to God for
an answer and he sent a demon to deliver his message."
