The wedding was
rescheduled and held three days after Alex was captured. Because of Relena’s
insistence, he wasn’t charged with murder or assault until all the evidence
against him had been collected. She wanted to make sure he didn’t have the
slightest chance of regaining his freedom, ever. And neither did Heero.
He was
surprised at himself during the wedding. Relena had worn the same dress,
declaring she would not go through the hassle of choosing another one, and she
looked even more beautiful this time than the first. She would be his wife, and
teach him to overcome what he didn’t understand about himself. Everything he
needed and wanted in life would come to him when she was happy.
Everywhere he
looked, everything he touched. Everything was her.
When asked by
the priest if she would take him as her husband, she made a point of saying “I
do” as loudly as her manners would allow her. Heero guessed that she’d figured
out his bit of revenge against Alex.

He smirked at
the knowledge that Alex was currently watching them kiss, the final seal in
their promise to one another. She was promising to be a wife, but he was
promising to be so much more. To love her, and to always be there for her would
take more courage than anything else he’d ever faced.
He was ready
now.
When he’d let
go, when he’d released his thirst for blood, he’d made a choice. It was her
words that had struck him, like a switch hitting a misbehaved child.
”If you kill
him for my sake, then everything I’ve worked for has been for nothing!”
No words were
truer than that. She’d been through so much and sacrificed so many things, and
yet she still refused to condone the death of the man who tormented her. What a
character she was. He was nothing, nothing compared to her.
And neither was
Alex.
As they walked
up the isle, hand in hand, Heero turned to her and smiled. She smiled back as
brightly as ever, and he knew that it would be ok. He would make it ok. Nothing
would ever harm her, or take him away from her. He would be by her side,
always, and he would obey the personal laws by which she lived.
He would not
hurt anyone ever again.
Just like he’d
promised.
In the
reception hall, he caught sight of Laura. The person who’d originally caused
him to open up. She was definitely Zechs’s daughter. She had young, innocent
eyes, but she saw things. She saw him, and he was glad for that. If it weren’t
for Laura, he never would have come to Earth. Had she not been in Relena’s
care, as Zechs had requested, Relena would never have been in danger. He never
would have been needed. Perhaps, one day, he’d tell her that. A long, long time
from now.
After Alex was
taken to the hospital, (in restraints,) Zechs had told him something Relena
hadn’t. Mrs. Darlian had introduced Alex to Relena on the night of his and
Noin’s wedding. The wedding was kept extremely private, and Alex had attended
on behalf of his entire family. His family, it seemed, did not appreciate the
Darlians’ advanced social status, and took Relena’s position as Vice Foreign
Minister as an insult.
They had sent
Alex as an emissary in the hopes that he would make the young daughter of the
late Mr. Darlian his fiancé, after which he would publicly humiliate her and
dishonor the Darlian family. Their plan failed, however, when Alex fell in love
with her. When Relena didn’t return his love, he snapped. Having received
everything he wanted in life, he wasn’t accustomed to rejection and took it
personally. He tried to force himself on Relena in order to make her pregnant
and then order her to marry him. That way, both he and his family would have
what they wanted. The only reason he didn’t succeed was because Zechs had found
him pushing Relena into a dark room and demanded to know what was going on.
Alex had been blaming him ever since.
In order to get
revenge, and to get what he wanted, Alex tried to kidnap Laura. She’d been born
three years before Zechs and Noin were married, and they’d left her in the care
of the Dryeks to protect her from their enemies during the war. When Alex
discovered that Zechs had a daughter, he set out to claim her as his own and
announce that she was his and Relena’s daughter. After the Dryeks were killed,
Laura was sent to stay with Relena until Alex had been found. They didn’t know
about his plans until they’d stumbled upon Dr. Netkin. It was only a matter of
time after that.
When Heero
heard all of this, he tried to push it away. If he dwelled on it, he would just
end up in the hospital smothering Alex with a pillow, which would break his
promise to Relena. Instead, he merely accepted the fact that now he knew
everything there was to know about the situation, and that everything was fine.
Hours later,
when he stood before his new wife in their honeymoon suite, he shook once
again. It was her gentle touch that steadied him, and her soothing voice that
calmed him. Then, when she beckoned, he finally went to her.
And she was
everything again.
