Chapter 2: "A simple assignment"

It was well after midnight in the L2 colony and the majority of the
business section had shut down for the day. L2 was known as New Chicago,
mostly because it developed a reputation for having the most criminal
activity than all of the other colonies in space. The lack of safe
neighborhoods and clean streets were not a problem for Hilde, after all it
was her home. She was born and raised on those very streets, learning more
there than she ever did at the girl's school. It was a tough childhood but it
was hers and no one could ever take that away from her as they had on
everything else. Colony night-life wasn't the only thing Hilde had to watch
out for and since she did live in one of the poorest sections, when the Doll
Collectors came she didn't stand a chance. That was all in the past now. No
longer is she a child, but a mature adult; someone that has made foolish
mistakes and learned from them.
Walking down these roads again, her mind swelled with memories from
the sites and sounds that surrounded her. Pulling her black, leather jacket
tighter around her and readjusting her cap for the eighth time that day,
Hilde turned the corner and entered into a worn down appartment complex. The
wood under her feet moaned and whined as she climbed the stairs to the third
floor. A flickering light from the tiny lightbulb that seemed ready to fall
out any second above displayed her way down the hall to her door. Taking out
a brass key, she unlocked the door with the numbers '301' and a backwards 'C'
hagging on it then walks inside. Hilde switched the lights on with a less
than graceful flick of her hand and promptly locks the door behind her.
A small cot, laptop, open kitchen, and a tiny bathroom greeted her.
Four, once white and now a faded yellow, walls lay bare and untouched. The
kitchen tiles, still slightly white held an orange color mildue in between
them. A side from the laptop that layed on the battered cot, no other signs
of electrical equipment or comfort was seen within the tiny appartment.
The black haired girl crashed onto her bed which squeeked in
resistance and proceeded to turn on the small computer. Instantly, a small
messege appeared on the screen, "How is New Chicago?"
"Roughly the same, hardly anything has changed," she typed back
before pressing 'enter.'
"Would you be willing to leave if you had the choice?"
"I'm not sure, maybe. All L2 holds for me are memories so going to
some place else wouldn't make much a difference to me."
"What if it was for a cause?"
 "What are you getting at?"
"I have a proposition for you, Hilde."
 "What kind of 'proposition?'"
"A mission. As you may know the Doll System's President has appointed
a new Commander for his ground forces, compliments of the Universal Nations.
We believe that something is going to happen and need find out before it
does."
"So, basically you want to get someone on the inside that will relay
the information to you. Namely me."
 "Yes."
"Why me? Why not the Back Leader, what's her name?.."
 "She's on a personal assignment."
"To blow up some Doll House, no less," she replied with an amused
smirk.
"She isn't like that anymore, but that's off the subject. Do you want
to do this or not? I'm offering this to you because I know you can get in and
do the job right and I wouldn't trust anyone else with this assignment."
"I'm sure you are just telling me that to get me to accept, but I'll
bite anyway. Alright, mission accepted."
"Good, I'll wire the information to you in a moment. Prepare to leave
the colony within a few hours. I'm trusting you, we all are, don't let me
down."
"You know I never do." She sighed and leaned back watching the blue
line stretch across the screen indicating a file transfer. The president was
plotting something, was he? Against the Amazon no doubt, but why would he
wait this long to finally attack? There must be more to this than what it
seems and it looks like Hilde is going to find out soon enough. All in a
matter of time, all in a matter of time.
