A Gundam Wing songfic by Yin
Disclaimer: Gundam Wing and its characters in no way belong to little old me *pouts* I just decided to write a little silly thing for my own amusement. The song that Relena sings in this fic is Dark Blue, performed by No Doubt. Again, it doesn't belong in anyway to me.

"Gah…!"
The tiny baby girl's violet eyes widened with her squeal of delight, as she found her grip on the object in front of her. With a gurgling sound that imitated an adult's laughter, she yanked hard on the loose strands of sandy blond hair trapped in her small fist.
Relena Darlian grimaced somewhat, surprised at the strength the newborn had. The grimace was soon replaced by a smile, however, as the tugging on her hair stopped. The baby seemed content enough now just moving her fisted prize up and down in front of her eyes, cooing softly at the strands as if they were some sort of important treasure.
"I'm sorry, Relena," Hilde's voice came to her apologetically, as the mother leaned over the table and started prying the hairs from the girl's grip, "Kaitlyn's used to being able to do that…what with Duo's hair and all."
"Hey!" Duo Maxwell gave the girl an indignant look, and quickly moved his dark braid of brown hair out of view. His own violet eyes were alight with wounded pride at the comment.
"It's all right." she smiled, gently tracing a finger over the baby's cheek as she lay cradled in Hilde's arms, "My nephew does that all the time when I come to visit."
"Yeah, well…that's because Zechs has even crazier hair than I do!" the boy muttered, taking a sip of his coffee. His gaze traveled over to Hilde, who was giving him an indignant look, "What?" he asked, blinking innocently.
The black-haired girl rolled her eyes, "You're hopeless, Duo!" she told him, turning her attention down to Kaitlyn. She rocked the girl gently in her arms and the baby gave a small screech at her appreciation of the movement.
"Aww…" his eyes twinkled mischievously and he gave her a wink, "You know I'm not."
"Maybe…"
The two looked into each other's eyes for a long while, and it seemed as though they were sharing some secret between the two of them. Relena watched the twinkle in their faces and suppressed a sigh. Zechs and Noin often had the same look about them, one of love and adoration…
…Which were two things she, as Foreign Minister Darlian of the Earth Sphere Alliance, had not been able to experience with anyone yet.
A slight look of discomfort must have shown in her eyes, because Hilde quickly turned to her. A grateful smile was on her face, "Thanks for coming, Relena. I really think it's nice for Kaitlyn to meet all of our friends."
"Yeah…especially since Auntie Relena can buy her a lot of nice stuff!" Duo joked, his usual wide smile on his face.
She returned the smile quickly, "I'm sorry I couldn't come earlier, when she was born. Things were just so busy…"
Duo shrugged his black-covered shoulders back, getting up from his chair, "It's no big deal. A lot of people are busy nowadays."
"Have any of the others stopped by?" "Quatre once or twice, along with Sally Po and Wufei…and Trowa and his sister came by with some things from the circus for Katie here to play with." he bent over Hilde's shoulder and made a face at the baby, who started laughing, "I tried getting in contact with…him…once, but that didn't go very far."
"Oh." Relena nodded her head, knowing who Duo was referring to. The boy was just too polite to actually want to mention him to her again.
Heero…
Her attention was once again drawn back to what seemed like an eternity ago, even though it had only been a few short years. To her first encounter with the boy dubbed the Perfect Soldier…a handsome, dark-haired stranger who'd threatened to kill her after they had first met. But, for whatever reason (Relena wasn't sure if it had been love, or simply a teenaged fancy of hers), she had constantly followed him around, wanting to know him more and more. And the more she found out, the more Relena ended up becoming ensnared in her feelings for Heero Yuy.
He was so different from her, but he wanted the same end result to the war…and that made her feel connected to him. It was the only thing that actually seemed to make sense in her emotions during that time.
And, in the end…Heero had saved her life, but then he just left without a word. That was over four years ago, now.
And yet you can't stop thinking about him, can you? she chided herself, You want nothing more than to just follow him around like that love-sick girl you used to be…and then…and then…
She stiffened her back unconsciously. And then what? She had never been exactly sure of what she'd do if she met Heero again. A part of her wanted to find him and hug him, keep him safe from the demons she could sense prowling in his past, perhaps even his present…
…But the logical part of her mind informed her very crisply that was out of the question. She had an obligation to the people of Earth and the colonies now, and that had to take priority. Besides, Heero was a grown man now. He didn't need some doting girl chasing him and trying to make him feel better. He would have stayed if he wanted that.
"Wishful thinking." she muttered under her breath, a wry smile appearing on her face, "I'm sorry, Heero…I suppose I'm still as hopeless as always."
"Huh? Did you say something, Relena?" Duo asked her, looking up for a moment from his laughing daughter.
She blinked, not realizing she had said that loud enough for him to hear, "Um…nothing, Duo. I was just talking to myself."
"…I think Kaitlyn's getting tired out." Hilde got up, nearly hitting her husband, who was still hovering over her shoulder.
"Hey, let me help!" he proffered his arms out, and she gave him the bundle of blankets. Almost immediately, Kaitlyn's tiny hand reached out and managed to grab a hold of his braid. The Great Destroyer winced, "Oww! She's getting a good grip!"
Relena smiled as she watched the two walk out of the kitchen and towards the room they'd built for the baby a few months ago. Both Duo and Hilde were going to be great parents, she could tell that already. The sight of them hovering over Kaitlyn was enough to cause her to once again wish for someone that she could share that with…
"Heero…I want to meet you, Heero…"
Words she had spoken so long ago came flooding back into her mind, and she took in a sharp breath. Every time she thought of having a family, a love…she'd always think back to him.
I still want to meet you, Heero…even now. You've suffered so much already, I just wish…I just wish you would have let me help you some…
A sigh escaped her mouth. As always, here she sat…Relena Darlian, a foreign minister AND a hopeless romantic at heart.
Music filled her ears, and her body gently relaxed. Risking a blue eyed glance over at the counter, Relena noted that an old fashioned radio Duo had found once was on, probably due to a bump from Duo as he had tried battling Kaitlyn for control of his hair while taking her for a nap.
The song that was playing was a familiar one, an old song she'd heard before. In truth, she'd practically memorized the lyrics by heart. As the female lead singer of the group started to sing to the beat, Relena's mouth started moving as well.
"I'm tired from exploring you
I'm sorry you've had some scary days
I'm lucky, they had me on a leash
Exposing, sometimes you frighten me"
She paused, frowning somewhat. Her voice certainly wasn't perfect for singing this type of song. It sounded so high-pitched to her, like she was hearing her own voice from a distance…
Nonetheless, while she was alone, the girl continued to move her lips.
"And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had"
Movement from near the doorway to the kitchen caught her attention, and Relena turned her eyes in the direction. Sure enough, there stood both Hilde and Duo. The girl was smiling at her somewhat, and Duo's grin was even wider than normal.
Feeling the heat rise up to her cheeks, her mouth promptly closed. How silly of her to get caught up like that…
"Go on!" Hilde's friendly voice encouraged, "Why don't you finish it, Relena?"
Blinking, she wondered if her cheeks were beyond red now…and into the purple stage, "I…what?" she asked, confused.
"Go on!" this time, it came from Duo, "It's not everyday we get free entertainment!" he gave her a sly wink, arms crossed over his chest.
The blush faded gradually from her face, and Relena took a deep breath. It wouldn't be TOO bad, after all, she knew the words…
…Besides, if they say anything bad…you can always throw something at them. the thought left a slight smile on her face as she nervously continued.
"I'm loathing most of your history
Hesitation, but then you siphon me
Your potential, well I'll indulge in that
Violent timing explains the aftermath"
Duo and Hilde were still watching her, almost expectantly. Relena frowned slightly at the thought. The glimmer in their eyes was one of anticipation, as if they knew something she didn't…
"And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's so sad it's too bad
Maybe I can make you feel better
Oh maybe I'm supposed to make you feel better"
The song started to remind her of the thoughts that had been running through her head just a few moments ago. Slowly, she swallowed hard, suddenly feeling uncomfortable at the thought of how close the lyrics seemed to go with her and her emotions. It took all of her effort just to choke out the next lyric.
"I want to comfort you"
I want to comfort you, Heero…please come back and let me…
She shook her head again. Hopeless.
"Wow." Hilde stepped into the kitchen and turned off the radio by flicking a switch on it's side, "That was pretty good, Relena!"
The boy took his usual seat at the table, "Yeah, it's nice to know we have someone who could impersonate Gwen Stefani one of these days!"
"I think I'd have to do something with my hair." she smiled at the good-natured joke, "Is Kaitlyn sleeping all right?"
Duo nodded, "Yeah, out like a light the second we put her in the crib. I think the radio might have woken her up later though. She gets pretty fussy about noises."
"I could go check…" she offered, getting up from the table.
"Really?" something that Relena couldn't describe sparkled in Duo Maxwell's violet eyes. He looked incredibly eager for some reason, "Could you? After all…you are her Auntie Relena, right?"
Relena nodded, the smile widening on her face, as she headed out of the kitchen. Out of the corner of her eye, however, she caught Duo and Hilde smiling over at each other. She was certain they were sharing another secretive look between them…of what, she wasn't sure.
The door to the baby's room creaked open softly, and Relena peered inside. The lights were off, only a dim light from the window came leaking in upon the crib in the middle of the room (of course, all around it were an assortment of toys, clothes, and diapers). It seemed as if everything was all right. Maybe the noise hadn't woken Kaitlyn up after all
A soft sound came from the crib, and the girl paused. It sounded like the tiny girl's laughter…followed by what sounded like an amused snort.
That couldn't have come from Kaitlyn… she slowly began to realize that the sound could only have come from another person in the room. But who…?
Stiff fingers flipped on the light switch, and she saw a flash of brown hair. Intense blue eyes turned in her direction, regarding her carefully. For her part, she simply stood there, too shocked by what she saw to even breath.
"Relena…" his voice broke the heavy silence in the room, and the boy (now a man practically) turned his attention back to the baby in the crib.
She blinked, stepping forward, "Heero…" her mind was screaming at her to run towards him, to hug him…do something, but she could only walk over to the crib and looked down at the baby with him. He had let her grab a hold of one of his fingers, and was awkwardly tickling Kaitlyn's upper elbow with his free hand.
For a moment, the only sounds that could be heard were the happy gurgles coming from Kaitlyn. Neither Heero nor Relena said anything. Relena was still having a hard time thinking that this was real.
Finally, she managed to blurt out, "What…what are you doing here?"
He gave a snort in response to her question, "That should be obvious. I got Duo's message…I wanted to see how his kid turned out like."
"And…?" she prompted.
A shrug came from his shoulders, and he still did not look at her, "…She doesn't look a lot like Duo." he stated simply.
That was true. Save for the color of her eyes, and it looked like the majority of Kaitlyn's traits had been given to her from her mother. Dark spots of hair were starting to creep up along her otherwise bald head, which gave a hint at the black head of hair that was soon going to come.
Relena couldn't help but smile at this statement, "Is that a good or bad thing?" she asked.
It took Heero a few moments to consider the question. Finally, he said, "A good thing."
"Oh." she paused for a moment. Something drifted into her mind, of the looks Hilde and Duo had been giving her and each other when they'd come back, "How long were you…here exactly, Heero?"
"Since the beginning of your song."
Relena's face turned red at this. It was bad enough that her two friends had overheard her, but now Heero…
"You sing better than I could." Heero's voice was his usual monotonous tone, but his eyes were on her now, "But you didn't finish it."
She nodded, saying nothing.
Turning his attention from the crib, the boy looked directly at her, "Why don't you finish it now, Relena?" he asked.
"I…" her cheeks were very red now, "Heero, are you sure?" He nodded, and then seemed to be waiting for her to respond. Relena's heart skipped a beat. He was here, Heero was actually here…and he was asking something of her. Wasn't that what she'd been wanting? Swallowing nervously, she began.
"Unlike you I had it easy
You're dark blue
Stained from previous days"
The normally cool blue eyes shined for a moment, and Relena was surprised by the reaction. Her heart was pounding, and something kept telling her that this could NOT be real.
But he reached out and touched one of her suddenly limp hands, giving a jolt of warmth through her fingers. His eyes seemed to be silently urging her to continue.
"And you're so sad
It's too bad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's too bad you're so sad
Maybe I can make you feel better"
By the time she had stopped singing that verse, Heero's hands hand found their way to both sides of her face. He gently cupped her burning cheeks, and her breathing quickened.
"I'm sorry."
She croaked the last lyric out, and she wasn't sure if the apology came from more than just the words to the song. After all, she had wanted to comfort Heero for so long. A part of her had always wanted to love him, always wanted take whatever pain he had away…
Heero Yuy seemed to read her thoughts, and he leaned forward. Something soft came onto the top of Relena's forehead, and it took her a few minutes to realize he had brushed his lips across there, "Don't be sorry, Relena. You've always been able to comfort me just by being near me."
His words were soft, and the girl barely heard them. Her eyes started filling with tears at the realization that maybe she wasn't so hopeless after all. She looked up into Heero's eyes, and smiled. Surprise overtook her when she saw him mimic hers with a very small one of his own, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. He returned her embrace by circling his arms around her waist.
For a long time, they simply hugged each other, until gentle laughter from Kaitlyn caused them to end their embrace. Turning to the crib, they saw that the violet eyed baby was staring at them with wide eyes, pointing a chubby finger at the two.
Relena smiled and turned to Heero, her eyes saying a lot more than words ever could. He also looked into her eyes, and she could see some of the emotions that he had been hiding from people, including himself, for all these years. Kaitlyn lost interest with them and kicked her feet into the air.
…It would be a very long time until the girl would find out what the importance of that shared look was for herself.
