Proximity

By Lady Minya

Jasenia walked slowly towards the conference room.  No she wasn’t scared or nervous.  She was engrossed with the information she gathered for Lady Une’s meeting.  She still couldn’t figure out what the true intentions of the ESUN are.  They didn’t get any information from Relena about her attacker, or from the guards that were around…

She closed the file and looked up.  “Which reminds me.  How did he get past security?”  She walked around the corner and down the hall.  “Even though I have other things to do and I really wasn’t invited, I have some questions of my own to ask,” she said quietly to her self as she opened the door.

Inside of the large carpeted room, an oval shaped obsidian-like table sat in the middle, with half its seats empty.  There were twelve seats in all, but only six people sat in them.  All heads turned to Jasenia after she closed the door.  Lady Une was the first to speak.

“Ms. Love.  How can I help you?”  Jasenia gave a small smile and walked towards her end of the table.  Duo sat back and stared at the dark haired beauty.  She wore a navy blue business mini-skirt, with a white sleeveless shirt.  She had a headband that matched her shirt, navy blue shoes with three-inch thick heels.  Her ID tag hung loosely around her neck and her name tags made sounds with every movement she made.  Her eyes were a lighter shade than her skin…her eyes were a mix of amber and hazel, and she was the color of cinnamon.  If anybody knew he wasn’t paying attention, it was Wufei.

“Maxwell pay attention,” Wufei called from the other side of the table.  Jasenia glanced in Duo’s direction but continued to speak with Lady Une.  “What Heero sent to us was plans for the Devil’s Angels next move.  Their intentions weren’t threatening but could have caused a ruckus here on earth and in outer space.”

Zechs sat back in his chair.  “You say that their intentions weren’t threatening…Ms. Love is it?”  Jasenia smiled and nodded.  “Call me Jasenia, please.  And yes that’s correct.”

“But aren’t they still out there?”

“Yes and no.”

“Yes and no,” Noin questioned.

“’Yes’ meaning their leader and a good handful of them are still amongst us.  But I’ve manage to get a hold about another good lot of them.”

“And how’d you do that,” Wufei questioned.

“Take a seat, Mai,” Trowa interrupted before she continued.  Jasenia looked at her current lover, boyfriend, companion, and best friend and turned a slight shade of red.  Even though she was light skin, it showed.  “Mai?” Duo said.  After she took her seat, “Yes.  That’s my middle name.”  She continued.

“Anyway, I’m a spy for the Preventers and I do have a few of my agents out there too…so, Heero here wasn’t the only one undercover.  Hopefully he didn’t do them any harm while he was out there.”

“Hn.  If they weren’t in the way them they are okay.”

“Thanks for your little declaration Yuy.  It was really helpful to this discussion.”

“And yours was,” Duo asked.

“Those are my agents I sent out there Maxwell and I want them to return the same way they left: in one piece and unharmed.  They are spies so Heero wouldn’t have noticed.  As I was saying, their plans really were to cause a slight confusion amongst the ESUN council…” she began.

“A slight confusion, Ms. Love?  What slight confusion could only cause a small riot amongst the people here on earth and outer space,” Wufei questioned.

“Well, one of the members I personally questioned stated that their main purpose was only to cause a small arising…like if I were to say something offending to you and we are able to work it out, but someone else comes in and instigates.”

“So you’re saying that they were only to start something small and someone else would come in and start a commotion,” Noin questioned.

“Yes.”

“Then if they were successful, who was supposed to come in and start a blaze,” Duo asked.

“Well…” Jasenia began.

“They already succeeded,” Heero answered.

“What,” was Duo’s, Wufei’s, Noin’s, and Lady Une’s reply.  Zechs and Trowa remained quiet.

Jasenia looked at Heero then back towards the rest of the audience.  “Attacking Relena was included in their plans.  Knowing that she’s still a bit unstable, the ESUN is in a bit of a mess as we speak, and if things get really heated, who knows what the delegates in outer space will think…”

“So this is connected to Relena,” Zechs questioned.

Jasenia sighed.  “I’m not sure at the moment, but it looks like it.”

Zechs sighed and got up.  He walked towards the nearest window and opened the shades.  Jasenia tried to clear up what she just said.  “I only assumed that Relena was apart of their plans.  But what gets me is that her attack happened two days ago.  The Devil’s Angels set their plan into operation over four months ago.  Nothing came up between then and now.  Nothing in the ESUN that is, and not only after Relena was attacked, that’s when the commotion went to the next level.”

“Why did the ESUN wait so late to realize that there was a threat,” Lady Une asked.

“Delayed action,” Trowa replied.  “Delayed action,” Wufei questioned.

“Well from what I’ve heard so far, and from what I know, someone inside knew what was going on and didn’t bother with notifying anyone else.”

“You mean that there is someone that’s working for the ESUN that’s part of them,” Wufei questioned.

“This isn’t making any sense,” Zechs interrupted.  “I don’t-…”

“Okay, look Zechs.  The Devil’s Angels were supposed to cause a stir in the ESUN, right?  Another organization called the Blue Dwarfs were supposed to cause the heavy chaos.”  She took a breath.  “Their…main objective is to cause a Coup d”etat.”

No one said a word.  All eyes turned to Jasenia, then back to Heero.  “Are we too late to stop them,” Lady Une asked.  Jasenia sat back in her chair and looked up at the ceiling.  They didn’t like her reaction.  “The Blue Dwarfs seemed to’ve planned this over a course of time.”  Looking at the table,  “They have people in the ESUN.  We don’t know who they are.  Killing Relena isn’t an option.  They just seem to want a New World order.”

Noin stood up and pounded her fists into the table.  “This can’t happen now.  Not after we tried so hard to attain the peace we have…”

“Right now as it sands, they are heavily armed with mobile suits and heavy artillery weapons.  That I was able to confirm,” Heero spoke, interrupting Noin.

“Tell me you destroyed what you could Heero,” Zechs seemingly pleaded.

“I did not confirm the location of their supplies or how they were able to produce them.”

Noin sat down in defeat.  Zechs placed his hands on the windowsill and closed his eyes.  ‘Fighting back tears I presume,’ Jasenia thought.  Lady Une sat and looked at the files.  Everything Jasenia said and what Heero mentioned was all there.  “What I don’t understand is how we didn’t see this.  All of it was right here in our faces and we didn’t even catch it.”

“We’ve been doing so well for four full years!  How could this have happened,” Noin said with her head down.  Wufei looked at her and shook his head.  “It sounds like you’re giving up already.”  Noin snapped her head up and glared at him.  “Don’t start that bullshit with me now Wufei.  I don’t want to hear it.”

Zechs looked over at his wife.  “Noin, calm down.”  “No Zechs.  I can’t take this anymore.  Why can’t people just leave things the way they are?  They make living in this world so hard.  Why can’t they just let it be?”  By now tears were rolling down her face.

“Noin…”

“All I want to do now is have a good life Zechs.  No more fighting.  That’s what I thought we were going to have…peace at last.  But…”

Jasenia stood up, “But we still haven’t confirmed exactly what they plan on doing Ms. Noin.  Will it be waging war, or have Relena step down from her high chair?  We still don’t know and right now they’re covering up their true plan very well.”

“But why all the machinery,” Lady Une questioned.

Jasenia shook her head.  “I still don’t know.”  “Then I suggest you be up to your best abilities and find out as soon as possible, Jasenia.”  She looked up at Zechs and gave him a grim expression.  “I am already working on that.  But we have to be careful.  There’s not telling what the members of the Blue Dwarfs and their little minions in the ESUN have up their sleeves.  So our only option right now is to lay low-“

“I’m not going to sit here and waste my time on doing nothing when we could be doing something,” Zechs argued.

“Zechs, I already said that-…”  “Well it seems to me that your spies aren’t enough,” Wufei interrupted.  “I don’t like the idea of sitting here doing nothing either, but if there’s nothing we can do for the moment, then so be it.”

Trowa looked at Duo and then Heero.  The both of them were looking at each other as if there were conversing with no words.  “Heero, do you know where the main base is located?”

“Is there even a base,” Duo added.  “I only saw records, but I wasn’t able to get close enough,” Heero answered.  “I have to go back to outer space,” Duo declared and stood up.

“Outer space?  For what?”  Lady Une questioned.  “I want to look further into this. We already have Quatre up there, Jasenia has her spies, and Heero says he’ll be staying here.  If they plan on over throwing Relena, then they will end up starting a war.”

“We won’t let that happen,” Trowa commented.  Jasenia shook her head and got up out of her seat.  Before she left the room, she voiced her last statement.  “So far, we’re sitting ducks.  And you guys have no type of defenses.  Relena’s still not herself, and the ESUN is corrupt.  All of this was done under our noses.  If the head of the department can’t come up with some logical explanation to give to the founders, then we are out of business.  You’ll have your local force to deal with it.  And they won’t be of any help.”

Everyone looked at her as if a little switch was turned on.  “When people panic, they don’t think.  When they realize it all, it’s too late.  If you’re gone, can they hope?”  She turned away and closed the door behind her.  Trowa stood up and headed for the door as well.  “Barton,” Zechs called out.  “If there are no Preventers, then who will stop the war from happening?  If Relena doesn’t recover fast enough, who will they turn to for guidance?”  He turned and faced them.

Lady Une shook her head.  “They want us out of the way so that there would be no interruptions.  If the people need Relena as a symbol of peace then if she’s not there it won’t be hard to take over.”  “If Relena isn’t present at any of the meetings, they’ll find a way to make it seem like their decisions are in her favor as well.”  Heero folded his hands and thought about it.

“What we need to do is find out who there are first before anymore meetings are held.  Relena’s pulling through so we could get her in by the next meeting.  Duo, go to outer space and try to find out where they are hiding it all.”

Duo nodded and left the room.  Wufei looked at Lady Une and stood up.  “I’m going to go and tell Sally and see what we can do.  We can head out there and do a surveillance check.”  Lady Une nodded and he left.  Zechs looked at Heero and Heero looked at Zechs.  “I’ll be protecting your sister from here on in.  If you have a problem now Zechs I suggest you state it.”  “What makes you think she needs you in her life Yuy?”

Noin looked at the two of them.  “Zechs.  Right now, he’s showing her the comfort she needs…The type of comfort that you can only receive from someone that you love.  You should know that by now.”  “Zechs gave a small smile.  “Don’t do it again Yuy.”

Heero got up to leave.  But before he left,” I won’t.”

Lady Une stood up and joined Zechs by the window.  “What are we going to do?”

“Hope…was a word that Jasenia used.  We use it.”
