When someone dies, more like dying in any type of accident or murdered, have you ever wondered if they’re happy to leave, happy where they are, or if they’re wishing, wanting, and demanding that they continue on.  Is it their choice or someone else’s…that’s a thought.

Chapter I: The Appearance

Flashing lights were everywhere.  All from fire trucks, local police cars, state troopers, and three different ambulances with more on the way.  State troopers and local police officers blocked off a huge part of Interstate 8.  Besides the fact that there were only three cars, one limo and one twelve wheeler involved, it was who was involved that caused the block off.  Traffic was directed to take a different route.

Besides the state troopers, local police, and FBI agents, two unidentified vehicles puled up to the scene.  Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Heero stepped out of their respective vehicles and cautiously walked onto the accident scene.  Two FBI agents intervened, but with the flash of their badges, the quartet moved forward.  They needed some 411 as to what happened, and what caused it.  About six feet ahead of them was the twelve wheeler with the front of the truck facing the shoulder (basically it blocked the road).  Two cars were crashed into its side.  The car in the middle looked like a kiddy bumper car.  The one smashed behind it looked like it left the car factory without the front part.  On both sides of the cars were bodies covered with white and red blankets…red deciding to give the white another color.

Duo looked to his left and saw what seemed to be another car off the shoulder and into a ditch.  He slowly walked over towards it until he was about three feet from it.  ‘Wait a minute.  This couldn’t be a civilian car…’ All the color seemed to’ve drained from his face.  ‘That’s Relena’s limousine…’ He turned around to see if Heero was behind him.  He wasn’t.  He was in conversation with a state trooper along with Trowa.  Quatre stood amiss the dead bodies.  Duo strolled over to Quatre.

“Quatre.  Who’s here?”

Quatre looked at his friend.  “I have yet to find out.”  Duo looked around towards the fire trucks and saw a group of six.  Quatre caught his line of focus and headed over to the group.

“I’m Quatre Raberba Winner.  I’m working for the Preventers Headquarters, the division in DC. I’d like to ask you people a few questions, if that’s okay?”

Slowly, they shook their heads.  Duo decided to take notes.  Quatre turned to the first group, the couple.  “Which car were you in?”

The male, which seemed to be the husband, spoke.  “We were in the first car, the one’s that’s unrecognizable.”  Duo looked suspiciously at the man.  “Then how’d you get out?”

“After we hit the truck, we quickly jumped out.  But as soon as we did, they rammed into us…”

“Unintentionally,” the older man in the next group interrupted.  He continued.  “I hit the brakes when I heard the crash, but there were other cars behind us as well.  Someone else hit us from behind and we ended up terribly wrecking their car.”

“Where’s the car that hit you,” Quatre questioned.

“That’s the thing.  We don’t know.  I don’t even remember how the car looked.  But when it hit us, it felt more like a push, than it being an accident.”

“You mean they hit you intentionally,” Duo asked.

“That’s what it seems and felt like, but I’m not sure.  Everyone else was directed off the highway if they stayed or left immediately.”  The man’s daughter clung to his arm.

“Daddy, can we go home now?”

Quatre kneeled down to her level.  “I’m sure you’re able to.”  He gave her a smile and tapped her small nose lightly.  She gave a small smile and hid her marked face.

Quatre thanked them and headed over towards Trowa, who was trying to calm Heero down, or so it seemed.

“What happened,” Duo questioned.

“Obviously Duo there was an accident,” Heero stated.  His tone was harsh and it was as if it had a poison touch to it.  “Relena’s…” He couldn’t finish it.

“Take a look at her limousine,” Trowa began.  They all looked in the opposite direction.  Her limousine looked like a contoured panty-liner.  “The trucker claimed that he saw a small animal on the road at the time.  Relena’s limo was coming onto the highway.  He hit the brakes hard, but ended up running over a squirrel.  His truck skidded to the side and hit Relena’s limousine with heavy impact.”

“How fast was he going,” Quatre questioned.

“Seventy-five miles per hour.  Her car hit that tree over there, flipped a couple of times and landed in that ditch.”  They looked back past there cars and saw the tree.  It looked as if it took a small shave.  The tree stood its ground.

“All of the bodies were thrown from the limousine.  All died instantly except for Relena.  The paramedics say that it’s a slim chance that both her and the baby will survive.”  Heero turned and looked at the ambulance that was from San Diego.  He headed for it and pulled the door open.

Two paramedics were seen trying to get Relena in stable condition.

“Are you the father,” a young woman asked.  Heero just stood at the doorway and looked at his fiancé.  “Excuse me sir, are the father of her child?”

“Yes.”

“Then we have to get her to the hospital before…”

A small beep could be heard coming from the inside of the ambulance.  Heero blinked his eyes not understanding or knowing where it was coming from.  ‘My beeper doesn’t sound like that.’

He watched as the paramedics scrambled to get her heart beat back on the line.  No steady beep.  They tried again.

No response.

Again.

Silence.

Silence was all he heard.  Silence was all that was heard after they turned the machine off.  But it was too loud.  That snapped Heero out of his little daze.  “Relena?”  He received no answer.  “No.”

“Sir, we’re sorry we…”

“No.”

“Sir there’s nothing we can…”

“No!”

The others ran towards Heero to see what the yelling was about.  As they reached the ambulance, Heero had already climbed into it and was kneeling by Relena’s side.  Duo clenched his jaw and turned away, looking far off into the distance.  Not wanting to hear or know what happened…but he all ready knew.

Nobody did anything to restrain him.  Trowa ushered the paramedics away from the vehicle until he was ready to get out.  He turned to face Quatre.

“We should leave him alone for a little bit while we call in and report what happened.”

“Why…Why now?  Not like this, Trowa…not like this.”  Trowa placed a comforting hand on his friends’ shoulder.  “Heero’s the one that needs the comfort right now.”

“Yes he does.”

Duo looked around at the scattered bodies.  ‘How’d they end up like this and the others came out alive?

“This doesn’t seem right you guys.”

Trowa looked around.  “No it doesn’t.  But right now we have to…”

“Who’s that,” Quatre pointed out.  Not to far from them, a cloaked figure was heading towards them.

“I don’t know,” Duo answered slowly.

“I’ll go tell them that this area is closed off,” Quatre stated as he headed in ‘its’ direction.  But as he neared, like a camera coming up fast on a certain object in a movie, the cloaked figure was already on the scene.  Quatre stopped in his tracks.  ‘What the hell was that?’

He turned to see the others looking in the same direction at him: the bloody arena.  The cloaked figure walked to the first body and just stared down at it.  It was as if time had stopped.  Everyone stopped their activities and looked at ‘it’.  ‘It’ just looked down at the dead body.

Telling from the length of the hair and the feminine features of the lips, Duo could tell that it was a female.  “What’s she doing,” he whispered to no one in particular.

“What makes you think it’s a she,” Trowa whispered back.

“That cloak may cover her body, but if you took a good look, you can tell.”

And he was right.  As the she kneeled beside the dead body, visible curves were present.  They watched as she pulled back the sheet, uncovering the face of Ambassador William Keen.  Heero was even interrupted from his tears to see what was going on.  The FBI felt the urge to stop the person, but something warned them not to.

She placed her index finger of her left hand to the dead man’s temple.  All was quiet and still.  It was as if all was in a freeze frame.

‘Do you wish to continue or do you wish to return?’  Ambassador Keen looked around at his surroundings.  It was misty, verdant, and very gloomy.  He was surrounded by tall evergreens.  But before him lay a silver lake that could pass for a mass of quicksilver.  It seemed to be very comforting and soothing at one point.  If one were to stay long enough, they’d want to stay between worlds forever.

A cloaked figure stood upon the surface in the middle of the lake.  Ambassador Keen stood three feet from the waters edge.

‘Where am I?’

‘You’re between the living and the dead…heaven and hell.

Choose your path.  Which way do you go?’

The voice sounded very friendly and soothing, but eerie at the same time.  It sent an echo through the space and a small chill down his spine.

‘Am I dead?’

‘If you want to be?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘You can stay, or you can go.

Up there or down there.

Look into the lake.’

William cautiously walked to the edge and peered into the still surface of the water.  He didn’t see his reflection, he saw the accident scene.  He looked back up at the mysterious figure.

‘Are you death?’

‘No.  I don’t take life I spare it.’

‘You mean you bring people back?’

‘If that’s what they desire the most, then so be it.’

‘But isn’t that cheating death…going against death?’

‘Somewhat.’

‘Everybody and everything has a beginning and an end.’

‘You wish to go back.  I can tell.

And yes it does seem to make Death look useless.

It’s not fair to have your life taken away from you,

especially by foolish people.’

‘Life isn’t fair.’

‘That’s true.’

‘But isn’t that going against god’s wishes?’

‘Is it?

What IS god’s wish?’

William had no answer to her question.

‘If it’s considered going against his wishes or wrong,

then why was I created?’

Still, he had no answer to her question, but to his own.

‘I’ll go back.  I want to go back.’

‘So be it.

But don’t speak of it.’

Duo, Trowa, Quatre, Heero, and everyone else present watched as the mysterious person kissed her first two fingers and placed them over the ambassador’s lips.  As she did this, a small glow of white light was being transferred from her to him.  Not too long after the blood that was around him receded into his body.  The others were shocked and astonished.  Never had they dreamed or even thought that something was possible.  The ambassador lives on!

William sat up and squinted at his surroundings.  IT was extremely bright and for a second there, he wondered if she was telling the truth or not.  “Just breath…” he heard her whisper.  He took the advice and inhaled deeply, smelling oil, gasoline, dusty-dry air, and blood.  Like a hard hit with a football, reality was there.  He quickly sat up and looked around.

‘Now I remember.  We were in an accident.  They tried to kill Relena.  Unless…’ He turned to the spectators and noticed only one.  But before he approached them, he turned to the mysterious figures.  “What about them?”

“What about them?”

He gestured to the dead bodies around him.

“Them?  What if…”

“They will rest in peace.  That’s what they want.  But Relena has a strong will to live.  The impact took its toll…”

“You won’t even check will you-…”

“I can tell whether or not if they wish to stay or go.  If I hear your souls’ cry, then I’m there.  If not, then I’ll leave you be.  Bringing someone back against their will can and will result in dire consequences.”

He shuddered at the quick thought that came into his mind.  ‘What…a whole bunch of zombies walking across the face of earth and space causing death and destruction?  Isn’t that what we already do?  But no…it’s much different.’

“Consequences like what?”

The cloaked figure looked at him for a good minute, then turned towards the ambulance.

“It will feed off of the people’s fears.  Bring what you all fear.  It’s much worse than what you humans have been through…and will go through.”

The Ambassador said nothing and did nothing but just stand and watch her walk towards the ambulance.  Everyone else said not a word…and did not a damned thing.

But when she reached the ambulance, Heero blinked back to reality and stood in her way, pointing a gun to her half-covered face.  He peered at her and she repeated his action.

She broke the silence after a few seconds.

“Heero Yuy…your wife is calling out and so is your son.”

“Who are you?”

She gave a small smirk and advanced to the open doors.  Surprisingly, Heero moved without further protests.

Relena stood in front of two fallen logs which lay at the base of a large lake.

She looked around to find herself surrounded by tall evergreens and

verdant grass.  She tried peering past the distant trees to see what was beyond.

“That’s forbidden land…”

Relena snapped her head in the direction of the feminine voice.

She located it floating just above the surface of the lake.

“Who are you?”

“Who am I…should it matter?”

“Are you death?”

“Would death waste time?”

“I suppose not.  Then what are you?”

“Are you a god…dess?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Do you wish to live or die, Relena?”

Relena looked around and realized that she wasn’t in her limousine or that she wasn’t sleeping. ‘Live or die?’  She looked down at her growing tummy.  ‘Heero…’

“I wish to live.  I must live to-…”

“So be it…”

Relena’s eyes fluttered open.  ‘Where am I?’

“Just breath…” a voice whispered.  Relena took in a deep breath and was hit with a flash of light.  She sat up a yanked the oxygen mask off.  “Where am I?”

The cloaked figure smiled and placed a hand on her womb.  “Watch your back, Mrs. Yuy.”  She got out of the ambulance and began to walk away.

“Wait,” Relena called.  Heero stood there and watched Relena…no his fiancé struggle to get out of the ambulance. ‘Relena…’

She climbed down and grabbed to mysterious woman’s arm.  “Wait.  You didn’t tell who or what you are.  Not even your name.”

“I’m not a goddess.  Then what am I?  What’s a name but a word to distinguish one thing from another; Someone from someone else?  But we all have the same name…”

Relena let go of her arm and watched as she retreated down the same way she came.

“She’s not a goddess?  Then…a deity,” Relena whispered to no one.

As she whispered her thought…her answer, the figure dispersed into butterflies…tons of brown butterflies.  They flew in one direction…the same direction she came.

The others…the spectators stood there in awe.

‘A deity…” Heero thought.

‘A deity…’
