Chapter 2

Duo clenched his fists and with quick, long strides went to the balcony. He stopped when he seen Heero leaning against the rail, his head in his hands...and tears running down his cheeks. He had never, ever seen Heero Yuy, the 'Perfect Soldier', cry. Not for anything.

But here he was, watching his former best friend cry over something that he himself was scared to know about. No doubt it was about what happened.

Duo shuddered, hating to remember how much hurt everyone had felt when he wouldn't go visit Heero in the hospital, how badly Heero was hurt. Relena stood with him, and they all pitied her.

He finally decided to walk up to Heero, and he did, slowly, cautiously. He reached out with a shakey hand and put it on Heero's shoulder. Heero almost jumped out of his skin and snapped around to glare at Duo, his Prussian blue eyes seeming clear and glassy from the tears. They just stood there, staring at each other. Duo's eyes were pleading, and he was hoping Heero would see how much it pained him, how much he wished that what happened never happened.

Heero stared into the violet eyes of his former best friend and partner. He wanted so badly to stop the pain this was causing everyone, but he didn't know if he could sacrifice all his pride for it. He just had, he knew, letting Duo see the tears and raw pain in his eyes. But that was different...he hoped it was true that it was.

Duo held out a hand as a peace gesture, but all Heero could do was stare. This long haired young man had cost him his heart, something he never, ever gave freely. Then, when he did, it was ripped from him. He lost enough of his pride...and his heart. Not to mention he was slowly going crazy.

Duo shook his head and let his hand fall to his side and stood with his head bowed, not moving. He tried, but that wasn't enough. He felt his eyes burning, his throat dry. He spoke in a voice barely above a whisper. "Why can't you just forgive me, Heero? Why must you be an asshole??? I've tried to kill myself because of the pain I'd caused. I tried to make things right. But you won't fucking compromise. She loves you, damn it. She always has. She thought you weren't coming back, and came to me for comfort..." He took a deep breath.

"I was wrong to do that to you Heero. Wrong to not tell her you were coming back to her. But, damn it,  it is wrong of you to keep that pain raw and in  her heart, in yours, and in mine. You had to be such a bitch that you couldn't have just out and told her in the first place when you seen us??" Duo looked up at Heero and his eyes widened. Heero's eyes were emotionless
except for one thing: sadness.

"Yes, it is wrong of me to cause more pain. And excuse me if I was a bitch for not telling her...But I seen her in my best friends fucking arms, and couldn't think of a God damn thing to say. That killed me, Duo. I had nothing to say...to either of you." Heero said after a while, running a hand through his hair. He looked at the sky as lightning started to strike, the wind
blowing angrily, and thunder rumbling in the distance. Then he looked back at Duo. " I would love to stop it all, I really would. But I don't think I can deal with it, Duo."

"You can try. Please...I am begging you Heero. Relene especially doesn't deserve this. I think there's something you also need to know." Duo said the last line quietly, referring to the hospital.

"After the car accident you were in, I wouldn't go visit you. I broke everything off with Relena..." He laughed softly, but bitterly. "Relena sat with you the whole while that you where in the coma...wouldn't leave your side. She..." He almost choked at this next statement. "She almost killed herself, Heero."

Heero turned away so Duo wouldn't see the anger, the pain that flashed like lightning across his face. He felt his hands shaking for a moment, and bet himself he had went extremely pale. When he turned back to Duo, he hoped he looked better then he felt. He spoke in a low voice. "Don't tell me anymore, damn it...let's just make a truce and get this shit over with."

Duo grinned and shook his hand eagerly, noticing the ghost of a smile that touched Heero's face. He knew it wouldn't be the same, but having him a friend again would be good.

Relena watched the two on the balcony and almost  laughed in relief. But instead, she walked to the door and outside. She always went to the garden when she needed to think, and she really needed to think right now. She sat down on the stone bench, shivered slightly when the cold wind assaulted her. She shakily put the clip in her hair to keep the honey blond locks from her hair.

The rain was cold when it started to fall, and that made her shiver even more. She wrapped her arms around herself and  looked up into the clouded shy. Lightning struck in blue flashes, and the thunder screamed in her ears. But she still stayed out there, and tried to think about what would happen now. But should couldn't, she couldn't get a simple thought to stay in her
head.

Heero was happy Duo let him be alone on the balcony. He needed it. He looked down at the garden, and seen someone sitting on a bench...and he recognized the person immediately. Relena.

He silently jumped down the 3 stories to the ground below, which was muddy from the sudden rain. He quietly walked  to the figure, and just stood behind her, not wanting to touch her for fear she would break. Finally, he put his hands on her shoulders and turned her to face him. Prussian blue met azure orbs as they stared at each other.

Relena lifted her chin in defiance, trying to make it seem she wasn't interested in what he had to say. But her eyes told a different story. They held the same pleading look Duo's had, and the same hope.

Heero slowly removed his hands from her arms and sat next to her. He knew what he had to say, but first he needed answers directly from her. "Why didn't you wait for me?"

"You..I didn't think you were coming back. I..I thought you might be dead, or that you just plain didn't want to see me. So.." She let herself trail off and looked at him for an answer.

"So you went to Duo?" He said bitterly, his eyes turning cold.

"I needed comfort..he was there." Relena said miserably.

"Did you ever even think of how Hilde might have felt to know that her best friend had went straight fot the man she had loved?" Heero said in a low voice. "Did you ever think how I might have felt??? I would have come back whether or not..."

Relena didn't know what to say. She knew he was right. She had hurt Hilde in the process of finding comfort. "I know, I know. I was just too down in my own self pity to realize it, and when I did, it was too late." She rubbed her hand over her face, then looked at him again. "I want it all to end..I don't want this to go on anymore..."

"It's not..." Heero simply stated.

"But you aren't going to forgive me, are you, Heero?" She said matter-of-factly.

"Nope, I'm not. I'm not forgiving Duo either. That scene cost me my heart. It was stolen by someone who didn't even know that they possessed it." He crossed his arms and leaned back. "You still care about Duo, don't you?"

Relena's eyes widened. She tried to say no, but the word wouldn't come out, because it was a lie to him. She just nodded, and sat there, her hands shaking.

Heero nodded and stood, shoved his hands in his pockets. "All right then. I'll see you, then." He turned and walked out of the garden.

Relena watched his form retreat, and frowned. She hated this, this whole damn love triangle.

She never noticed the shadow of a man disappear. But she and the others would regret not noticing this shadow, for this man was not someone who took the Peacecrafts lightly. He hated them with his whole heart. Cold, blind hatred.
