A young lavender-haired girl ran
through the endless hallways of the mansion,
hardly taking time to look at
the lush furnishings. Instead she was pulling a
younger girl by the hand.
"Come on, if we don't want the boys to find us we have to find Lynn and
Key!"
She said, a bit hushed, enjoying the tension of suspense.
The
younger girl giggled happily and let herself be pulled by her older
friend.
"Himega! Please, slow down! And look at how your dragging your cousin! Don't
do that!" One of the maids cried as the two younger girls passed her.
Lillian
made a disgusted face at being called 'himega' but kept on running.
Suddenly
the smaller hand seemed to slip out of Lilli's larger one and she
stopped,
looking back at her cousin.
"Doshita, Miaki?"
Miaki was
staring at a mantel of a decorative display. On it was a picture of
her
giggling happily when she was three, being held by her smiling mother.
Her
father had his arm around her mother and he also smiled faintly. Lilli
walked over to stand by Miaki, looking at the same picture. Slowly Lilli
reached up and grasped the silver frame firmly in her hand, turning it over
and pulling up the tabs. She pulled off the backing and the tissue paper and
delicately took out the picture. Smiling, she replaced the paper and the
backing. Turning towards her wide-eyed younger cousin, she extended the
picture. Miaki, finally understanding, took the picture gently, looking down
at the faces.
'Kaachan. . .'touchan. . .
Her brow
furrowed and her right arm slid up over the covers to rest by her
head.
"Atashi. . .ai wa. . ." She breathed quietly.
Relena snapped herself out
of her reverie and looked at the form on her bed.
She slowly got up, sliding
the door to her room open and peering down the
hall.
"Heero? I think
she's waking up."
Heero and Mulan both slowly entered, Mulan sitting on the
opposite side of
Heero and Relena.
"We should get Sally-"
"It's all
right." Mulan intervened.
"But Sally's a doctor."
"So am I."
Relena
blinked, a bit stunned.
"Okay. . ."
Mulan leaned over and whispered
something to Miaki. Miaki hoarsely whispered
something back, her eyes still
closed.
"Watashi w-" Mulan started, but Miaki shook her head. She opened her
eyes and
slowly sat up with help from Mulan, her hand reaching out for her
bag. She
blinked.
"Where. . .?"
Relena slowly handed the small
canvas bag to her. With her right hand she
reached in and fumbled around for
a minute, pulling out a picture and handing
it to Relena.
"Miru. .
."
Shaking slightly, Relena looked down at the picture.
Oh. . .my. . .
A slightly-older looking Heero and Relena were
standing next to each other,
Relena smiling happily Heero with his arm
around Relena and smiling faintly.
And in Relena's arms was. . .
"Miaki.
. ."
Relena slowly looked up at Miaki, her chocolate brown hair falling in
front
of her prussian blue eyes.
"Miaki. . .how did I die?" Relena
whispered quietly. She felt more than saw
the tension the question arose.
"Leukemia. I was only four."
"And. . .your father?" Relena prodded
gently.
"Suicide. I was five."
"What about. . .Duo and Hilde?"
"Murdered. When we were twelve."
Relena gulped. She had to continue, no
matter how hard this was.
"Trowa and. . .Midii?"
"Murdered."
"Quatre
and Dorothy?"
"Dorothy was murdered."
"And. . .Quatre?"
"Suicide."
She recited the words like a robot, a human that had lost the will
to live,
breathe and eat. . to survive.
"Wufei and Sally?" Heero's voice interjected.
"Both murdered."
Relena cradled her head in her hands.
". . .dare
ka. . ."
"Saturn 9."
Relena almost choked on her own spit.
"Nan desu
ke?!?"
"Saturn 9 is the ESUN's manufacturing operations. Your gravely
mistaken."
Heero almost recited.
"Would you like to take a bet?" Mulan's
bitter voice cut in. Silence.
"How's it like. . .the time which you
live in?"
"Awful." Miaki's voice was dry. "You cannot travel the streets
without being
stopped by a suspicious soldier. Most children go to school
with soldiers
standing in the back of the room. The battlefields are the
front yards of
houses that were burned by being falsely accused of being
'spyholders'. It's
awful, people are murdered by the masses."
Silence.
Deafening, black silence.
"You came back to change an event in one of our
lives? You came back to
change the future?"
"No. We came back to make
sure nothing changed in the past. If we needed to
change something we would
have brought the leukemia vaccines."
"Well, why didn't you?!" Heero
interjected, obviously very mad.
"Baka! You don't realize it would change
everything! The way we live, what's
happened, and we don't need any dead
people from the past helping us!"
Heero gritted his teeth and his eyebrow
twitched. He looked really mad until
Relena put a hand on his arm.
"She's right, Heero."
He turned to look at her, trying to hide his
surprise.
"Nani?" He said in his monotone voice. He sighed.
"Okay then,
if you really are my daughter, your grounded."
"FUTURE! READ MY LIPS! FUTURE
DAUGHTER! I haven't even been born yet so you
can't ground me yet!"
Relena rolled her eyes.
"Let it be, Heero."
Heero developed an
obvious twitch in his left eye.
I don't believe this!
Relena just
smiled and shook her head. Miaki fell back against the pillows
and sighed.
"Will our remembering anything of your trip effect anything?"
"Most
likely. That's why you're not going to remember."
Relena blinked.
"Ano.
. .nani?"
"You don't need to know."
Relena sighed and looked back down
at the bag that she held, noticing the
embroidery in the corner.
"'Orion'. . .What's that, Miaki?"
"The department of the Preventers that
keeps the world from falling apart."
Relena sighed again. I really don't
believe this. . .
She noticed another small buldge in the bag and
reached in, pulling out a
plastic-covered ID card. In the top right corner
was the Preventers insignia
and the word ORION was written over it in
spaced-out letters. A scantron
barcode was in the middle.
"Name. .
.Miaki Yuy. . .born AC 202. . .Age to date 17. . .Test and
operations pilot,
ANGEL-" Relena stopped short and her eyes went wide.
"ANGEL Gundam unit 01.
. .Miaki. . .what the hell-" She was interrupted as
Mulan snatched the card
out of her hand and the bag too.
"That's nothing you need to know." She
said, rather coldly.
"No, it's-you don't-MIAKI!"
She turned to see her
future daughter asleep, her expression blank and her
muscles slack.
"Everyone out." Mulan whispered, her head bent. Heero slowly stood and
gently
touched Relena's shoulder. Relena sighed but then nodded and stood
up,
walking with him out of the room. The door slid shut behind them.
"I'm sorry I had to do that." Miaki whispered, still asleep.
Mulan gave
her a wry smile. "Your a good actress."
"That's what they taught me to do. I
can look you straight in the eye and I
could lie to you. I'm not human
anymore, am I. I'm a program." She whispered,
her eyes still closed. Mulan
sighed and shook her head.
I'm not human anymore, am I. I'm a
program.
Heero shook his head.
No. Impossible.
He thought
of something Relena had told him.
"Is it true? Does history really repeat
itself?" Heero whispered to himself.
He shook his head.
"If I were still
living, I swear to God I wouldn't let it."
